I love you, MATE!

Three seconds after switching to MATE Desktop, I am in love.  It’s been a long while now that I’ve been trying to get used to Gnome 3, gave up, switched to KDE 4, which is better, but nowhere near as good as Gnome 2.  All of a sudden, all those distant memories of a useful, stable, working desktop environment which is completely out of your way are a reality again.

I’ve only done it on my home laptop for now.  But with positive feelings that strong, I think my work laptop will be switched over on Monday.   Huge thank you goes to both everyone who made Gnome 2 an awesome desktop and those who forked the MATE.  Please keep it up!

  • Allows a custom built toolbar, no magic markup generators, enabling the web site to use all the goodness of Bootstrap, Font Awesome and so on…
  • Does not force any styling – it’s all up to you
  • Uses standard browser features, no magic non-standard code, toolbar and keyboard configurable to execute any supportedbrowser command
  • Does not create a separate frame, backup text areas etc – instead keeps it simple and runs everything inline in a DIV

This is an interesting idea.  Sadly, it didn’t work in my Google Chrome, even though it should be supported.  Works nicely in the Firefox though.  Follow the link to see the demo.

If you have the data, use it!

Spending quit a bit of time on the web, I’ve boosted my tolerance levels to bad design, horrible user interfaces, and twisted logic.  However, there are still things that annoy the crap out of me.  Among the two most frequent are these:

  1. Google throwing me into Greek language.  Yes, I do live in Cyprus, where Greek is an official language.  However, Google knows damn well, that I don’t speak it.  Every single time I was given a choice, I’ve switched back to English. I have automatic translation of Greek to English set in Gmail, Google Reader, Google Chrome and Google Nexus, all of which are linked and synced to my one Gmail account.  Why do I still see Greek as the default language every other week?  This is getting retarded.
  2. Facebook can’t figure out the gender-specific language.  Even though it knows the gender of the user to be female, it still sends me notifications like “Olga commented on his Wall post”.  English is not even my native language and I am getting annoyed by this.  How you guys can look at this every single time and not catch is beyond me.
