The Microsoft experience

I smiled after reading this post.  It reminded me of the fact that in our office, designers use my laptop to test web sites on Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.  We have two guys doing the designs, and one of the uses Windows Vista, which runs MSIE 7.  Another one uses, I think, Windows XP, but with MSIE upgraded to version 7 too.  I heard it’s possible to have several versions of Internet Explorer running on the same Windows installation, but nobody around here knows how to do it or cares enough to experiment.

But the funniest thing in this whole story is that my laptop is running on Fedora Linux.

Workspace observation

This Web Worker Daily post reminded of an observation that I made about my workspace. There is one thing that shows if I care about the workplace, work, and the environment, or not. It’s a cup coaster.

I often have a cup of coffee or tea close the computer I am working on. I always, and I mean always use a cup coaster at home. That’s the only place I always care about. When I move to a new office or change a job, I always use cup coaster too. I’m usually excited and truly interested about new places. I care.

If I lose interest, my cup coaster tends to disappear. Either it falls on the floor and hides under the table. Or it brakes. Or the cleaning lady takes it away. Or something else happens to it. Never do I do it intentionally though. It took me some time to notice this…

Entering the wonderful world of podcasting

Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve officially became a podcaster. As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts lately and decided to try to make one of my own.

My Pod Voice – is my new podcasting project.

I haven’t yet decided on the format and regularity for this show though. That is because such decisions need more information than I currently have. I am just sort of getting it out of the door and will improve it along the way.

The first episode has no music or any special sound effects. I’m just talking about my, myself, and my projects. (I was surprised to find out that I can talk for more than half an hour on such a simple subject.)

This whole thing is still pretty rough, as I am really a newbie in this area. If you have any ideas on how I can improve either the website or the podcast, or any suggestions on the direction that I should take, please let me know. Thank you.

Another showstopper

Just when I thought that only a couple of days were left before I could tell you my little secret – a project that I am working on, it got delayed. And it is entirely my fault. I haven’t thoroughly investigated available database alternatives and their limitations.

It turned out that MySQL is not the best alternative for this specific case, although I am enjoying it in many other projects. PostgreSQL seems to be the next best choice and it doesn’t have the limitations which are important for this project. In fact, it has a number of advantages that will surely come handy.

So, with this I’ll live you hanging until further updates…

Threaded dreams

There is an urban legend that drinking tequilla before going to sleep will guarantee you some really cool colorful dreams. Unfortunately, that’s more than an urban legend. I’ve tried it myself several times and it never worked out.

But another thing that I’ve tried myself and that worked out just fine, but which I haven’t heard anyone talking about, is threaded dreams.

What are threaded dreams? Well, threaded dreams are those that you (or should I say – I) have after programming threads or forks too much. I’ve always had a suspecion about the existance of threaded dreams, but I never had to program threads often enough to notice the trend.

This month though confirmed my suspecions a few times in a row. Two of these dreams were particularly interesting.
