Via Kottke blog I’ve learned that Barcelona just celebrated its last bullfight. Apparently, the vote has past last year to stop this old tradition. And as much I am in favor of preserving cultural bits, I do agree that bullfighting falls under animal cruelty and thus should be stopped. New York Times has a few photos.

World largest statue planned for Cyprus
Cyprus Mail reports:
WHAT MIGHT be the world’s tallest statue is being planned at a Russian backed development off the coast of Limassol. The 135 metre statue of an angel named The Kind Angel of the World is being planned at Monagrouli, about 20km from Limassol. The development is being planned by a Russian foundation, the International Club philanthropists and Patrons of Europe and will include a conference centre for 1,300 delegates, a ‘presidential’ convention centre for 300 delegates, a theatre and banqueting hall. It will also include a number of cafés and restaurants.
Just to put this thing into perspective:
The statue itself will rise 135 meters from the ground, and visitors will be taken up via lifts. Inside, or atop, the head of the Kind Angel a restaurant/café will offer spectacular views.Currently the world’s tallest statue is the Spring Temple Buddha in China, which is 128m high. New York’s Statue of Liberty is 93m high.
This sounds like an ambitious project which, when completed, will provided a much needed boost to Cyprus tourism.
Pukkelpop 2010
If there is one place to be on August 19, 20, and 21st this year, it’s Pukkelpop 2010. Pukkelpop is the largest alternative music festival in Europe, with an amazing list of bands coming to perform this year and without tens of thousands of fans gathering from the whole world. Here are just some of the bands in the line-up for this August: Placebo, Iron Maiden, The Prodigy, Blink-182, Limp Bizkit, NOFX, Bad Religion, Gogol Bordello …
I’m sure this year it will a party like no other – Pukkelpop is celebrating its 25th year! Happy birthday, Pukkelpop!
P.S.: Why am I so excited about the music festival somewhere in Belgium? Because I was there last year and it was quite an experience. Events of this magnitude don’t happen every year and if you get to attend one – that’s a life-time experience.
P.P.S: No, unfortunately I won’t be able to make it this year.
One of the things to love about Red Hat
Karsten Wade shares five reasons for which he loves working at Red Hat. Not a reason on its own, but a part of one is this excellent quote:
At this company, the technical people have a serious influence on adjusting the mindset of the very smart people we bring in who haven’t yet fully absorbed the open source way.
Just brilliant!
