On managing Linux kernel development

The Linux kernel is one of the largest collaborative software projects in the history of the world and has almost nothing in the way of formalized management structure. We have people who have a strong operating systems background who have been contributing code, and then we have people like me. I have a background in fruit fly genetics and yet someone lets me get close to the Linux kernel; this seems wrong. And then we have people who are genuinely kids in their bedroom. It’s a miracle it works as well as it does. We should be astonished that we’re able to get it so right so much of the time.

Ergophobia – a fear of work

Ergophobia, (derived from theĀ GreekĀ “ergon” (work) and “phobos” (fear); also calledĀ ergasiophobia), is an abnormal and persistentĀ fearĀ (orĀ phobia) ofĀ workĀ (manual labor,Ā non-manual labour, etc) or findingĀ employment. Ergophobia may also be a subset of eithersocial phobiaĀ orĀ performance anxiety. Sufferers of ergophobia experience undue anxiety about the workplace environment even though they realize their fear is irrational. Their fear may actually be a combination of fears, such asĀ fearĀ of failing at assigned tasks, speaking before groups at work (both of which are types of performance anxiety), socializing with co-workers (a type of social phobia), and other fears of emotional, psychological and/or physiological injuries.

Until now, it was particularly difficult to obtain reliable figures on the results of the Android operating system in China. Indeed, there is no “centralized app store” and most smartphones sold in the country do not use Google services, including activation. In fact, it is very difficult to know the actual results. Ā The search engine Baidu has corrected this by publishing a report on trends in the mobile internet for the 3rd quarter 2013. It appears that there would be now 270 million active users of the Google platform in the country (more than 20% of the total population). Growth would, however, decrease with a small 13% against 55% for the same period last year but up 10% compared to Q2 2013.
