Happy birthday, GitHub!

GitHub is five years old. Ā I find it really difficult to believe that the service I rely on so heavily, both at work and at home, haven’t even been around so recently. Ā I use GitHub both at work, and at home. Ā  In fact, every single piece of development I do, even if that’s just for a one time bash oneliner, I start it with a new git repository. Ā And more often than not, that repository ends up being pushed to GitHub.

Happy birthday, guys! Ā Please keep doing what you are doing. Ā It obviously works for millions of people.

National Geographic competition and birthday

BigPicture blog runs not one, but two posts on National Geographic. Ā One is for their Photography Contest winners – and there are some trully amazing pictures, like the one of this bear. Ā And the other one is covering the upcoming 125th birthday of National Geographic.

Happy birthday, Slashdot!

Slashdot, probably the most well-known technology news website, is celebrating its 15th birthday. Ā I can’t say that I’ve been reading it for 15 years (yet), but I’m pretty close. Ā If I remember correctly, Vladimir showed it to me some time back in 1998-1999. Ā I’ve followed it since.

Even today, with all theĀ multitudeĀ of tech blogs and news outlets, Slashdot is still important to me. Ā While you can get the same kind of news elsewhere, the discussions are still the reason to go back. Ā Some are funny, some are obligatory, but mostly are insightful comments that show the original article’s problem Ā space from different perspectives.

Happy birthday, Slashdot!

Before and after : aging celebration

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who called, emailed, tweeted, facebooked, skyped, or sent me birthday best wishes via any other means. Ā I got all of them, and it means the world to me. Ā One thing all my birthdays have in common is they remind me of all the wonderful people that I am surrounded by. Ā Thank you all.

Secondly, a few of my younger friends, inquired as to how is being 34 years old different from being 35 years old. Ā As easy as the question seems, the answer is quite complex. Ā To ease up with the explanations, I’ve decided to create the visual aid that you can see below (excuse my poor skills of a graphical designer).

As poor as the image quality is, I think, the illustration does answer the question. Ā Please feel free to let me know if you need any clarifications.

Thirdly, please don’t think bad of me for not inviting you to my birthday party. Ā There was none this year. Ā With EasterĀ coinciding on the same Sunday, I felt it was slightly inappropriate to compete with religious celebrations. Ā Especially given the rainy weather and out-of-country trips for a few must-be-there guests. Ā Excuses, excuses, I know. Ā I was just too lazy to arrange all things in time. Ā Until the next year.

Once again, thank you all for warm words and wishes. I had a good one!
