Category: Site News
This website is very old. It’s been with me for many years. There are plenty of articles which are useful both for myself and the rest of the world. Bit by bit, word by word, link by link, image by image, this site was filled and filled over the years. Technologies changed. Some new techniques and concepts came up. Some old ones faded away. Spending as much time as I possible can (after everything else) on this site, sometimes I manage to introduce big changes – like a new bit of functionality or a totally different look. Not to confuse and scare everyone, I try to be open about the changes that were made. When something big is changed I post a description of what it was and why I felt the change was needed. These updates are published in this category.
Upgraded the site’s WordPress theme to FavePersona…
Upgraded the site’s WordPress theme to FavePersonal 1.3. This time, using the child theme best practice.
WordPress plugin : Auto-Schedule Posts
WordPress plugin : Auto-Schedule Posts
You gotta love WordPress! For anything that you can pretty much think of, there is a plugin already. Just now I realized that I’ve been posting quite a few things at once, and that it would be way better to distribute such moments of “creativity” across the whole day. There is, of course, the manual way of post scheduling, but that’s boring and annoying. Instead, I thought, there could be a plugin to do so. Gladly, I checked the WordPress plugins before jumping into my own coding.
Auto-Schedule Posts plugin does just that and more. For now, I’m setting it to a 60 minute interval and leaving everything else default. Let’s see how that will work out.
Update: Unfortunately I had to disable this plugin as it conflicts with the Social plugin (and, I suspect, many other ones too). The post is not available until later, yet social network notifications are being sent out, resulting in bad experience (endless redirect loops and such).
Two more minor changes
I’ve done a couple of more changes to the site:
- Links in posts content are now bold. This has been bugging me since the first day I started using this theme, but I never found time until now to actually fix it. Looking through the post, links are now easily identifiable – no need to move your mouse over every word you think has a different color shade.
- Did some magic for Google to pick up the rich text snippet for the author. Hopefully, after the next time it indexes the site, there will be my little avatar right next to blog links in results. While I new the generic steps to do so, this post was helpful. Let’s see if it works now.
Minor site updates
… just because there is nothing better to do at 5am, and WordPress 3.6 is not here yet.
- Replaced Lightbox 2 plugin with Fancybox for WordPress. Lightbox worked fine, but had an annoying conflict with the images in the “About me” section. Now it all looks nice and dandy.
- Removed featured posts section from the header. I keep forgetting to use those, and having featured posts from last year seems a little awkward. Maybe I’ll bring them back later.
I’ve also wanted to try the Infinite Scroll plugin from WordPress Jetpack, but apparently my theme does not support it yet. So I’ll leave it for Facebook and Twitter for now.
