Alexander

Alexander

Alexander” is one of the big time movies of the last year that I missed in the cinema. Olga was in her late pregnancy already when the movie came here and we thought that with all the battles it would be scary for the baby to live through almost three hours of it. So we skipped. Today I got my hands on a copy and watched it.

Big Trouble in Little China

Someone gave me a copy of “Big Trouble in Little China“. I remember watching it when our family got our first VCR and as far as I could remember I liked the film. I was wondering what would be my reactions now.

Directed by: John Carpenter
Genres: Action, Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy
Cast: Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, James Hong, Victor Wong, Kate Burton, Donald Li, Carter Wong, Peter Kwong, James Pax, Suzee Pai, Chao Li Chi, Jeff Imada, Rummel Mor, Craig Ng
IMDB raintg: 6.7
My rating: 5.0 [rate 5.0]

Well, the film itself is pretty average. It has a good story that brings ancient Chinese mythology and martial arts into modern United States. The result is a good mix of action, mystery and humor.

The weak sides of the film are acting and dialogues. Actually, I think dialogues are to blame. They are so unnatural and artificial that anyone would have a problem performing them. But acting sucked too. Those few scenes which were natural were delivered very unconvincingly by most of the actors. Kurt Russel was trying though and did a better job than anyone. I also liked two Chinese guys out of the whole crowd. The first one was Victor Wong who played Uncle Egg. I’ve seen him in several movies and he is good everywhere. He has this charm that allows him to mix the look of old and poor with the goodness of the character. The second one was James Hong who played the main bad guy Lo Pan. Hong is a great actor and the one who contributed to a long list of movies (about 150 of them only as an actor).

On the good side, I was surprised by the quality of some special effects. Not all of them, but some. For example, that flying head with lots of eyes looked pretty cool even by today’s standards.

Overall the film was good, minus the dialogues and the acting. If you don’t mind these things much, than watch it – you’ll enjoy it. Otherwise, skip to something else.

Black Moon Rising

For today I had a totally random choice of movie – no IMDB, no comments, no wishlist. I’ve got myself a DVD with “Black Moon Rising

Directed by: Harley Cokeliss
Genres: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Cast: Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Hamilton, Robert Vaughn, Richard Jaeckel, Lee Ving, Bubba Smith, Dan Shor, William Sanderson, Keenan Wynn, Nick Cassavetes, Richard Angarola, Don Keith Opper, William Marquez, David Pressman, Stanley DeSantis
IMDB raintg: 5.1
My rating: 3.0 [rate 3.0]

I guess all my research paid off. I’ve got as much as I spent looking for it. Really slow and boring film with Tommy Lee Jones non-the-less. Not only the movie was slow and boring, but it was dated 1986. I bet it was slow and boring even by 1986 standards.

The costumes and the haircuts were bad. So were the fights. So was all the acting. And the special effects. But the worst ever was the soundtrack.

It was a pain to listen even for me – a guy who doesn’t pay any attention to background sound. During the whole film there were these noises produced by different instruments. They weren’t notes or music. They were noises. Random and painful. I thought that maybe the musicians didn’t know how to play music. But when it got to some romantic erotic scene, they all finally started to assemble something. I’ve heard music, even if bad one, but it was music. It continued for approximately 20 seconds and than… back to noises.

Skip this movie if you haven’t already. We’ve got enough newer crap.

The Ladykillers

The Ladykillers” is one of the recent movies that I missed. I didn’t want to see it as the rating was a bit low and the title was vague, but when I learned that Tom Hanks is in it, I decided to watch it.

Directed by: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
Genres: Animation, Comedy, Crime, Horror
Cast: Tom Hanks, Irma P. Hall, Marlon Wayans, J.K. Simmons, Tzi Ma, Ryan Hurst, Diane Delano, George Wallace, John McConnell, Jason Weaver, Stephen Root, Lyne Odums, Walter K. Jordan, George Anthony Bell, Greg Grunberg
IMDB raintg: 6.4
My rating: 6.5 [rate 6.5]

This film is a nice criminal comedy. It is a very styly one as well. The cinematography is excellent as is the acting. The story is interesting too. I wish there was more humor in it though. As it is, the movie can be seen as sad at some places. But a very good overall.

The DVD contained an interesting mini-film about the making of musical instruments. There were few intervies with the guy who was making all sorts of musical instruments for almost 30 years, and who made guitars for such famous people as George Harrison and Kurt Cobain. I found this minifilm surprisingly informative and educational.

There were also a few gospel songs which didn’t make it into the movie, but which were very fine aswell.
