One million views

It’s been a while since I posted any milestones for this blog, so here you go.

1 million views

 

Yup, according to WordPress stats, my blog pages have been viewed a 1,000,000 times.  Now, they were probably viewed way more than that in the full version of the history, but the plugin that counts them was only installed in 2007, if I remember correctly.  Also, there used to be a period of time when this blog was served via an external cache, so only a few of the visitors triggered a real page request.

Still, it’s nice to see the number build up.

According the graph above, I’m getting significantly fewer visitors in the last year or so.  That’s because I’ve been running between several jobs and side projects, and at some point nearly stopped blogging completely.  But I am back now, so that should go up as well.

Happy birthday, Slashdot!

Slashdot, probably the most well-known technology news website, is celebrating its 15th birthday.  I can’t say that I’ve been reading it for 15 years (yet), but I’m pretty close.  If I remember correctly, Vladimir showed it to me some time back in 1998-1999.  I’ve followed it since.

Even today, with all the multitude of tech blogs and news outlets, Slashdot is still important to me.  While you can get the same kind of news elsewhere, the discussions are still the reason to go back.  Some are funny, some are obligatory, but mostly are insightful comments that show the original article’s problem  space from different perspectives.

10,000 tweets

I just noticed that my Twitter stream has passed 10,000 tweets.  Here is an obligatory screenshot.

Of course, not all of these were handcrafted – there were plenty of automated tweets from Delicious, Evernote, YouTube, and even Flickr.  Many are simply automated notifications of blog posts on this site.  But still, a good chunk of them were either written by hand, or thought of before pushing a button one of those connected services.  Not that that’s a particularly large number of tweets either – but it felt like a milestone.  There aren’t so many things that I’ve done 10,000 times off.  So here’s one.

I’m 33 today.  Feels exactly the same as yesterday and a year ago.  But getting all those best wishes from people all around the world is, of course, super cool!  Thank you all so much.

Blogging milestone : 5,000+ posts

Ladies and gentlemen, I bring to you post number 5,005.  I nearly missed it altogether, so please excuse a not exactly a round number.  And now, before you throw things at me, let me highlight some disclaimer points:

  • I’ve written more than 5,000 blog posts in my life.  But quite a few of them went down, disappeared, or are blocked behind corporate firewalls.  Today’s celebration is only about my personal blog.
  • Not all of these blog posts were written by hand.  Some are aggregates from Twitter, Delicious, or some other third-party service that I used.  But I count them anyway, because they compensate for those lost posts, and because the spirit of sharing even via a third-party is too similar to blogging.  I found something worth sharing, I shared it, and it ended up on my blog in one form or the other.
  • Most of these posts are utter crap that nobody will ever read or use.   But I still celebrate them, because I took the effort to write them, and because they were important to me at some point in time.
  • On top of that, I celebrate all these posts that survived over multiple blog software migrations, hosting changes, restructuring and reorganizations.  While they are a huge mess that many of you would be glad to throw away, they constantly remind me of all those transformations that I went through.  And if nothing else, they provide me with an extra leverage in any data organization argument.  After all, thousands of posts and comments over 10 years of blogging should count for some experience.
