I am a huge movies fan. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I don’t get much free time to enjoy watching movies. But when I do, I try to share my thoughts about the movies that I’ve seen. Movie reviews, celebrity news, trailers of upcoming flicks, etc – are all in this category.
I came across “Men in Black 2” trailer today. I got excited … until I realized that the movie was released back in 2002. And I somehow missed it altogether. Never heard of it. IMDB rating of 5.6 out of 10 tries to explain how come I never saw it. But still. Here is the trailer.

It’s been a while since I wrote a movie review. This is mostly because with all the crappy films that came out recently, I lost my inspiration for a bit. I’m glad to report that my inspiration is back on track. How could it not be, with the film like “Inception“, which I went to see in the movies on Saturday night?
We, the non-14-years-old audience, were waiting for this or similar movie for a really long time now. It’s everything you want from a movie and more – it’s smart, it’s engaging, it’s entertaining, it’s thought-provoking, it’s pleasant to look at, and it gives you something to talk about for days after. I’ve heard plenty of positive reviews of this movie. And I’m sure I haven’t heard even a tiny bit of them – currently the film is #3 in IMDB’s Top 250 films of all times.
For me personally, the movie was quite a surprise. It is similar in different details to so many other movies, yet it is unique, standing on its own, and way better than most. While a lot of people, of course me included, enjoyed the twisted story, I was mostly taken away by the visuals. The combination of great visual effects and outstanding photography are break-taking. It is on par with the bullet-time photography of “The Matrix”, adjusted for a years that pasted. In particular – two scenes that were jaw-dropping: bending of the city, which is partially seen on the poster, and the fight in the hotel corridor. During these two scenes I almost totally forgot what the movie was about – it looked so great, that I had a huge “Wow!” sign occupying all space inside my head.
I’ll say even more. Do you remember when the “Avatar” movie came out? It was great, wasn’t it? But you had to use the 3D glasses which were annoying, and you sorta had to see the movie, because there was so much hype about it. These two things for me were a bit offsetting. I was expected it to be great. I had to force myself to wear the glasses. “Inception” on the other hand was totally unexpected, and it came in 2D (thank you whoever made that decision). I went to see a twisted story with Leonardo DiCaprio, and I what I got out of it was so much more.
Anyways, I can talk about this movie for hours. But I’d rather do it with people who saw it. So, don’t miss out your chance – movies of this superb quality don’t come out that often. Do yourself a favor and see it in the cinema. It pretty much requires the big screen. It’s so good that I’ll probably go see it again, and end up buying a DVD or something.
Absolutely a 5 out of 5. Highly recommended.
This one looks like it has everything a good action movie needs – sexy chicks with guns, mafia, dragons, Nazi soldiers, swords, airplanes, fantasy planets, mental institutions, and more. Samuel Jackson is missing, but hopefully the rest will make up for his absence.

Here is something to live for for all of you Harry Potter fans out there – an official trailer for “Harry Ptter and the Deathly Hallows”. Apparently they stuffed so much into that part, that they had to break it into two. I wonder how that will go with the movie going crowd and the pirates.

The other day I went to see “The Hurt Locker“. There was plenty of hype around this movie – 6 Oscars, 73 other award wins, and 47 nominations for more awards. Not to mention that the director is Kathryn Bigelow, who is, among other things, an ex-wife of James Cameron. (And as we know, in many cases, you are who you are married to, and if so, it’s extremely helpful in this case).
Anyways. Obviously, with all that noise, I’ve heard quite a bit about the film, and I saw the trailer, and I had a slight idea on what it was and how it was. I went prepared. Or so I thought…
The film turned out to be totally different from what I was expecting. Actually, I think it turned out totally different from what anybody were expecting. And that’s a good thing. Surprise! Somehow this film is very different from pretty much everything. It has action, but it’s not an action. It has drama, but it’s not a drama. It’s supposedly has documentary, but it’s not documentary. The storyline is very vague and doesn’t seem to stand out or lead anywhere, but on the other hand the film is rather long and I didn’t get tired of it at all. It’s very natural.
The way it works, I guess, is that this film is using atmosphere to tell the story, rather than dialogs, powerful music, and impressive shots. As I said, at times you don’t really know where it goes and if it goes anywhere at all. But yet somehow it all makes sense. Also, one other thing that I really enjoyed, and which I thought was a cornerstone of this film is simplicity. The whole situation in Iraq is not simple. There are many sides to it and many points of views. But this film drops down to a very simplistic view of the whole picture from the eyes of a few American soldiers. There is no propaganda, there are no high-flying ideas. It’s just that simple – a few guys at war. It’s not about why they are there. It’s about them actually being there.
The film is not very entertaining, even though it has a few hilarious bits and quite a few action sequences. It’s simple, and yet deep. It doesn’t force ideas upon thee, but it does make you think. And as I said, it’s different from most films I’ve seen, and yet very similar somehow.
Overall, I’ll give it a 4 out of 5, and I would highly recommend it.
