Edward Scissorhands

I do have a special skill. With all the lot of movies that I am watching, anyone can still pretty much name a movie that everyone knows, everyone seen, everyone talks about, and I will be like “What? What’s that?”. It seems that everyone has seen “Edward Scissorhands“. Many people saw it more than twice in the last 14 years. It was on TV numerous times. Still, today was the first time I heard about it. And it was the first time I saw it.

Edward Scissorhands” is an absolutely amazing film. It is one of the best (if not the best) dramatic fairy tales that I have seen. It mixes all the classics like “The Beauty and The Beast”, “Pinoccio”, “Frankenstein” and a handful of others, and still it has something of its own.

Everything about this film was perfect – the story, acting (especially by covered with make-up up to unrecognizable leves Johnny Depp), music, decorations, costume design, casting. There was nothing I can put my finger on and say that they’ve missed the spot.

10 out of 10. I also think that this film would make an excellent addition to the home collection; particularly to those homes where children in their young teens are living. Great movie!

Statement

Watched an interesting film – “Statement” – on DVD. This one is about exciting current days life of those who used to help Nazi during the World War II. Probably not all of them, but surely some of them had all the fun, pictured in the movie. Imagine yourself being wanted by police for crime against humanities, hunted down for execution by some extremist groups (not in the movie, but nicely mentioned), looked for by relatives of your victims, and searched for by your ex-comrades who are afraid that you will let all the secrets out. Now that is some fun!

It is nice to see a European film once in a while, especially when it has to do with Europe and World War II. Somehow American movies are slightly of the ranks for me. Good story, excellent photography, and good acting by Michael Caine all make me give this movie a …

… 7 out of 10.

Home on the Range

Watched “Home on the Range” on DVD with Olga. She just loves animations and I do enjoy them too once in a while.

This one was following pretty standard Disney story line with most of the characters resembling usual Disney characters in a zillion of other animations. No surprises here. I wish they could have put more jokes in it. The ones that were there were pretty good, but they needed more.

Although this animation was pretty average, I am going to rate it as a 6 out of 10 just for the way it was drawn. I just like that two dimensional wild wild west animation type and I seem to never get enough of it.

Shattered Glass

Watched “Shattered Glass” on DVD.

This is an excellent movie about this journalist in a major magazine, who was fabricating parts of full texts of articles. It is based on a real story, and even names the names to point out the guilty ones. Stephen Glass did, indeed, work for The New Republican and he did, indeed, all the fabrication that was talked about in the movie. Here is a link to CBS News article for you.

This film pushes one to think about all the trust people put in mass media, and wheather they should do so or not. It shows, how the “never-lying” mass media consists of the same people as all the rest and how unprotected it is from human errors, both accidental and intentional. What missing, is a coverage of online journalism which grew up a lot lately.

Anyway, back to the movie. The movie has interesting and somewhat original story. Story telling was nice too. Good acting was delivered by all the major characters (all The New Republican stuff, etc). Camera work and photography were average, but it didn’t matter all that much.

8 out of 10 is a fair grade, imho.

Far from Heaven

Watched “Far from Heaven” on DVD.

This is a somewhat drama about everything. Seriously. How many other movies do you know that have homosexualism, racism, family problems, and 1950s in it? Not that much, eh. If you still no more than one, than throw away those that have a happy ending, because this one doesn’t. Dramatic, isn’t it?

Anyway, the movie is good and surely worth the time. It is a bit too slow for my taste, but it compensates the pace with excellent photography and acting, especially by Julianne Moore. Make-up, costumes design and decorations were also outstanding. All suggested that this movie is from 1950s, although it was released in 2002.

My vote goes to 8 out of 10.
