This is not something that I personally need, as I have a dedicated server from RapidSwitch for all my hosting needs, but the offer still looks quite good for those cases when you need quick and simple web hosting for a site or two. I clicked through the Google ads to check it out and its true – HostGator.com offers a website hosting (not to be confused with VPS), for only 1 cent per month.
This is not bad at all for the unlimited disk space and bandwidth. And just in case you don’t trust them with your penny, they promise a 45 day money back guarantee.
I recently switched over to iwstack.com, a proper HA cloud with very attractive pricing. I’ve been testing it during the last few days and it worked really well, this cloud may be a good alternative to more expensive dedicated servers.
Yup. However I am still not trusting the cloud fully. One recent example was bitcoin mining on a compromised server. If it’s a dedicated server – you’ll just get a slower server. If it’s in the cloud – your bill will probably shoot through the roof.
Maybe I’m just being old-fashioned. :)
Thanks for the link though. I’ll repost ;)
Well, mining won’t cost you much: usually you pay for an instance per hour regardless of CPU usage. If attackers run something network- or disk-intensive, you may get extra traffic or I/O charges.
Having said that though, I am trying out the cloud approach. For now, it’s Amazon S3 for my backups. Running it only for like 5 month now, but very satisfied – fast, easy to use, and cheap.
How cheap is cheap? I’m currently backing up to Dropbox and external media, but would rather switch from Dropbox to something else. Let me check the AWS calc :)
Btw, I even considered AWS EC2 again last week, but tried it and ran away: I get 8 times more CPU and I/O for 1/10th of the price from iwStack :| EC2 is ridiculously expensive.
Hmm, S3 is cheap indeed, I will probably pay a couple of Euros a month. May even consider their Glacier for long-term backups.
Just checked my latest invoice. It’s a total of $3.46 for just over 40 GB stored.
Do you use their CDN as well?
Nope, not yet. The next service I am considering is their Route53 for the DNS.
