Picture of the day

Morning shipToday’s submission is yet another sunrise from the windows of my office. Three images is all I need to disassemble the sunrise. A ship by itself, a sun by itself, and a combination of ship and the sun in the single image. That’s it.

Also, I am slowly coming to the idea of doing some postprocessing of the images. I have played with some pictures in Gimp and the results can be much different. Sometimes for better, sometimes… well, I am learning you know. I haven’t decided completely yet, but I am coming to that decision. Some say that postprocessing digital images is something comparable to darkroom processing of film. Maybe they are right.

I have several reasons for postprocessing. Firstly, cropping is something that I need, since the viewfinder of Digital Rebel covers approximately 95% of view area. That means that I cannot fully control of what gets into the frame and what not by using only a camera. Secondly, camera lacks some common features like black-and-white photography, sepia effect, a couple of others, which are simple and might improve the image sufficiently. Thirdly, any means that help to express the idea better are good enough. And fourthly, I don’t have to reason everything I do – sometimes I can do something just because I can. Here, I said it. :)

SunsetI realised today that I have been doing injustice to the office building by just using one side of it. The side I was using does indeed has a sea view and a prerogative of sun rises. But, on the hand, opposite side has a sunset view and a pretty busy road down to the left. I decided to correct the situation, hence the album.

TravelI’ve been in the office since all the time since I woke up today and until I came home just a few mintues before the calendar changes to the next day. I planned to photograph a small Chinese take away place which looks great in the dark, but they were closed already and the lights were off. When I came home thinking about what to submit today, I saw my passport laying on the table, and immidiately it struck me. Passport, money and airticket will make for a nice travelling theme. But since I am not going anywhere any time soon and it has been some time since my last travel, I couldn’t find any airticket at home. So, be it. Two passports and more money are supposed to make up for it.

The album with the lonely image is here.

SignsToday is exactly one month since I’ve started the ‘Picture of the day’ project. One part of me is sceptic and cannot believe that a month past by. Another part of me is very proud. It is proud not of all that crap I put out on a daily basis, but about the dedication I put into it. I’ve learnt a couple of cool tricks along the way.

I was thinking if I should continue this or not, and if I should than for how long. On one hand, I am pretty bored with this already. On another hand it does teach me alot and I get constant practice. Yet on another, Chernobyl kid kind of hand, I have a couple of other projects in my head. I think I will continue with the ‘Picture of the day’ thingy for another month. I will also move the folder to be a part of, yet to be created, ‘Projects’ tree. I will also start with other projects and will let you know on how it goes. Stay tuned in other words.

Anyway, today I was shooting straight out of my car, while driving home from work. The funny thing I’ve noticed on the way are the signs of all those little workshops in the downtown. One of them was for signs. Somehow the guy head the dirtiest sign around. And his phone numbers were way too old (without mandatory 25 Limassol prefix). I can only imagine what kind of signs he can make. Hehe. Kind of my photos. But I don’t do them for money. Yet. Maybe I should.

Milena’s Birthday

MilenaHere are the pictures from Milena’s birthday party (today for those in the unknown). It was a great party with lots of excellent food, drinks, nice people and music. Especially music. Especially towards the end, when there was a real rock concert with electric guitar, bass, keyboard and a couple of microphones. Cool!

Photography-wise it was pretty tough. There was defenetily a lack of light. Most of the pictures were done with ISO1600 setting, f4.5 or f5.6 aperture, on-camera flash, and some are still blurry. It seems that I really need a more powerful flash unit.
