The known universe

I’ve shared and favorite’d this video before, but it’s worth another time. Every time you get depressed or pissed off about something, every time someone gets to you, or you think something horrible happened, just watch this video.

That’s the known universe for you. And if you think about how small we are compared to our planet, and how small our planet compared to some other, and how small our galaxy compared to the other ones, and so on and so forth, and then think about your problem again – doesn’t it look tiny and beyond microscopic now?

Linux has contributed over $10 billion in R&D value to the world. It runs every major financial trading platform in the world. It the only way the mobile industry could respond to the iPhone. It has over a $50 billion economy just in enterprise computing alone. It runs 90 percent of the world’s fastest supercomputers. It powers Sony cameras, Samsung televisions, your DVR, your GPS system and most of the major Web sites in the world. How on earth does this spell “trouble” for open source?

Linux is accelerating a major industry transition that is already well underway–an industry in which we pay for software and hardware to one in which we pay for neither.

On the beauty of the Free Software culture

This short post is an absolute must read. Quote:

Still, there’s a qualitative difference between letting people download your own work from your own site, and watching other people try to profit from it. But it is precisely this difference that strikes at the heart of the Free Software/Free Culture ethos. Part of choosing a Free license for your own work is accepting that people may use it in ways you disapprove of. There are no “field of use” restrictions, and there are no “commercial use” restrictions either. In fact, those are two of the fundamental tenets of the “Free” in Free Software. If “others profiting from my work” is something you seek to avoid, then Free Software is not for you. Opt for a Creative Commons “Non-Commercial” license, or a “personal use only” freeware license, or a traditional End User License Agreement. Free Software doesn’t have “end users.” That’s kind of the point.

Apple Magic Mouse

Here is a new bit of technology from Apple – Magic Mouse. A mouse with no buttons, in my humble opinion, is as innovative as a car without wheels – people have talked about it, someone tried to make it, but until now it didn’t really work. Will this one work? I have no idea.

Skating tribute to Tetris

Tetris recently celebrated its 25th year. But despite all the progress in computer games, all those game consoles, it is still a game much loved and played around the world. More so, people are often creating remakes, tributes, and all sort of creative appreciation. Here is an example video of a few skateboarders getting together and doing something cool.
