Request for an application

I’ve got an idea for an application. If you have nothing to do or looking for an idea to practice your mad programming skills, feel free to use this one.

Flickr is an excellent source of images. Better even, all images are tagged and most are available in different sizes. It would be very nice to have a tool that could use Flickr images as desktop backgrounds (wallpapers). Ideally, I would just specify the tags that I am interested in, such as sports, nature, or landscape, and this tool would get the list of images from Flickr that are available in the resolution that I am using. Images could be random or sorted by some criteria, such as posted date or number of comments. If there would be a preview and an easy way to change to the next image (maybe even automatically based on time period) I’d be totally happy.

I don’t see myself programming this anytime soon as I don’t care much for desktop candy. But if one was available there is a chance that I would use it. I also know of a few people who would simply love something like this.

No more WWW

I am trying to stop using the “www.” part when typing in URLs. The web has gone a long way and most of the websites don’t need to start with WWW. Just the domain is fine.

But I have been typing “www.” into the address bar for so long that I don’t do it on purpose anymore. My fingers just remember it and use it every time I switch to address bar. I type it even faster than I can realize that I’m typing it. I got better at realizing in the last few days though. Now I catch myself when I’m done only with a couple of first “w”.

It becomes really annoying. Imagine your hands doing something you’ve forbidden them to do. Won’t that freak you out?

When I will finally get rid of the “www.” in my address bar, I’ll start to get rid of “http://”. I know that protocol is much more useful than those stupid domain parts, but when browsing the web, HTTP is the default protocol and even if you don’t specify it, the browser knows ho to handle that.

New color scheme for Vim

I’ve been using dante color scheme for Vim for as long as I can remember. It’s a nice one and suits me perfectly. Sometime though I feel that need for a change and than I have to go through a rather painful process of getting something new. This time I decided to change my Vim color scheme. This process is particularly painful because:

  • there are a lot of color schemes available for Vim
  • screenshots are rarely available
  • most color schemes are designed for graphical mode (gvim), while I use console only

Anyway, I went through a number of color schemes today and decided that I like Impact. Not only it is designed for console, but it also defaults for black background, which is exactly what I use.

I tried it with both Perl files and email messages and I am satisfied with my choice. Now for some useful stuff…

Update: I came across a great page that is generated by a perl script once in a while. The goal of the page is to provide an easy way of finding a colorscheme appropriate for your tastes without the hassle of installing numerour colorschemes on your computer.
