I’ve been very lazy with site changes these days. It’s been almost a month since WordPress 1.5.2 was released. I have updated the site only today. There shouldn’t be any visible changes as most of the improvements are under the hood. If you see any problems with the new version – let me know.
Category: Site News
This website is very old. It’s been with me for many years. There are plenty of articles which are useful both for myself and the rest of the world. Bit by bit, word by word, link by link, image by image, this site was filled and filled over the years. Technologies changed. Some new techniques and concepts came up. Some old ones faded away. Spending as much time as I possible can (after everything else) on this site, sometimes I manage to introduce big changes – like a new bit of functionality or a totally different look. Not to confuse and scare everyone, I try to be open about the changes that were made. When something big is changed I post a description of what it was and why I felt the change was needed. These updates are published in this category.
Wikipedia, here I come!
I should probably check my referrer logs more often. A lot of interesting stuff goes on in there. Most fun are, of course, Google search phrases that bring people to my blog. But today something even more interesting was discovered. I made it into Wikipedia – the world’s largest free encyclopedia. I know that anyone can edit pages there and add a link to their own website, but trust me – I didn’t.
Someone has linked to my 220,000+ domain ideas from Domain hack page (scroll the page down to ‘External links’).
It couldn’t last forever
Something just have to be there. Like good ventilation in computer case. Otherwise it is very easy to run into problems.
I have mentioned previously that my computer case was missing a fan or two and that caused it to overheat several times a day. Well, today it did it for the last time. I suspect that the IDE controller on the motherboard got burned.
So, instead of buying a couple of fans I had to buy a new motherboard now. But buying just the motherboard is way too boring. I had to get at least the CPU as well. But I didn’t do even that. Instead I bought the whole new computer. Actually, it’s not brand new. It is second hand. But it is a brand one – IBM. It is very similar to the one I have in the office.
So, now you can enjoy this site running on a 3GHz Pentium 4 CPU with 1 GByte of RAM. I’ve moved in all the hard drives from the old computer, but I think I will be upgrading my disk space soon too. Fitting five IDE devices into a medium tower case was rather tricky. And they make too much noise too. I didn’t hear much of it with the old machine because it was very noise itself. The new one is totally silent. The loudest sound it makes is me banging on the keyboard. It is impossible to say if the computer is on or off by only listening to noise it makes.
Anyway, I think I got a good deal for 240 CYP.
Irregularity and disconnections
I’ve been a bit slow with blogging these last few days. And you might have noticed problems connecting to my website. This is all due to the heat that we have here. It is very exhausting both for humans and machines. No wonder all Cyprus is taking vacations. It is impossible to be productive at all.
My machine also can’t take the high temperatures and shuts down every now and than (about 15 times a day). I am not along in this – many people complain of the same problem. I was thinking of putting more fans into the case, but than realized that it won’t help much, since it is very hot in the room itself (about +30 degrees Celsius).
All we have to do is wait. Another couple of weeks and things should be getting back to normal…
Adsense Logger plugin for WordPress
Adsense Logger is an open source PHP script that helps website owners to optimize Google Adsense for their sites. I just found out about it today and realized that I wanted something like this for a long time, but never took the time to find it.
Apparently, there is an excellent plugin for WordPress that automatically installs and configures Adsense Logger to work with WordPress. Simply copy the files from the ZIP archive and assign correct permissions. TADA! You’re done. If you wish to see your Google reports within your WordPress administration area, enter your username and password in the plugin configuration page.
I’ve just installed and tried it and looks really good. Now all I am missing are those ad clicks (hint, hint, hint).
