Leonid. Self portrait.Today’s assignment was to use a different camera. Something that doesn’t have all the bells and whistles. In fact, the less control – the better. The only other camera except my Digital Rebel that I have is the small and weak thingy on SonyEricsson P800.

I’ve made a total of 5 images and 3 are more-or-less OK. One is outstanding – my self portrait. It just has all there is to the snapshot with a crapy camera. I love it.

The album for today is here.

Luna Park

Olga and I went for a walk today in the Luna Park. It is one of the biggest attraction parks that I have seen in Cyprus, but not as big as the ones I’ve been at in Russia. This park is the same one that we saw in Paphos when we were staying there. It moved to Limassol than. I was afraid that I will never get a chance to photograph it, but I managed. Heh.

Anyway, I need more experience with photographing such places. Lots of light and lots of darkness do confuse the metering system of 300D a lot. Most of the times I used the camera as estimation and shot in Manual mode. Focusing was a bit off too, but manual focus is something I’ve practicing a lot recently.

All pictures were postprocessed in Gimp. Cropping, USM, levels and saturation are all the menus that I touched. Enjoy the rest of the pictures here.

Pear

It seems that I am getting pretty confident with photography of small simple items. Just to confirm that confidence, today I’ve made an excellent (by my measures) picture of pear. In order not to make is boring as Snickers bars from before, I played a little bit with the background. Instead of using a single solid white piece of paper, I used four face tissues put together in to the square. They do seem to compensate for absolute simplicity of the subject nicely.

The album with the only shot is here.

SnickersI guess you must be pretty tired of sunrises, sunsets and ships at sea. Well, if you aren’t – I am. I started the day with photographing yet another ship in the sea, but decided that it is enough and I should no more. At least for now.

Quick trip down to cafeteria and snack machine provided me with two bars of Snickers chocolate, which turned out to be a couple of lovely subjects. Decorating these was really easy – just put both of them on a piece of white paper from the printer. Set is ready. Now I wish I had a number of different lights with different output power and colors. But I hadn’t. So I played with opening and closing the windows, turning the office light on and off, and using on-camera flash. I guess it worked. I made about 20 shots out of which I have selected three. All three were slightly touched in Gimp. And here they are – the results.

Sunrise

Sunrise is about the only chance I have to think about the shot while having the camera in my hands at those days that I work until 7:00am in the NOC. Most sunrises are very atmospheric, but I still fail to bring the atmosphere into the image. But practice makes perfect they say.

Yet another sunrise picture here. I have also worked on it in Gimp for a bit. Mostly I did leveling, removal of dust particles (I do need to clean my sensor), and USMing the sun. Finally, it doesn’t look that much more different from the original, but there are less critique points non-the-less.
