Taxi Driver

Having nothing better to do, watched “Taxi Driver” on DVD. This film is considered a classic by now and it is surprising how I managed to not see it until now.

With all the hype around it and all the excellent ratings at IMDB, I didn’t like it. Probably it was something very strong and needed in 1976, but it does stand very well where I am now. It’s too slow and boring. There are not enough thoughts and feeling to make philosophical drama. There is not enough actions to make it an action. There are not enough jokes to make it a comedy.

But it was nice to see young Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, and Harvey Keitel.

Starsky & Hutch

We just came back from the cinema after watching “Starsky & Hutch“. I guess this is a refreshed version of the original 1975 “Starsky and Hutch“, but I am not sure because I haven’t see that one.

The year 2004 version sucks. Vladimir is very lucky that he couldn’t make it to the movie. :) This film is so lame that I cannot even remember the last time I’ve something that bad. Very bad.

Advertised as a comedy, action, and crime; being directed by Todd Phillips (the guy behind “Road Trip” and “Old School”), with Owen Wilson in it – I expected it be somewhat funny and entertaining. I didn’t go to see a megahit, but at least something. Pity.

There were few jokes, but most of them were old and overused. There were 70s, but more like a look through the prism of 2000. There were good guys and bad guys, guns and shots, but there was no action. There was an excellent car, but there was no driving. There were beautiful ladies, but there was no sex. Not even boobies.

Overall it was a very boring slow going bit with nothing in it to see except for the trailer maybe. Owen Wilson – was the only reason I didn’t put this movie on the absolute bottom of my film rating list. He was not enough for the 4 pounds though.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I just came back from the cinema, where they ran “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind“. It’s a 10 out of 10 movie and it has a range of reasons to go as high as #46 on the IMDB’s Top 250. It is one of the best movies I have seen ever. Ever.

This movie is perfect in each and every sense. There is a good story behind it. It’s original. There is good acting. Lots of it, actually. There is even more of good acting. It brings up few excellent points and makes one realize a number of things. It made me thinks of stuff that I never thought before. In short, this movie touched me.

There were few strong points cast-wise. First of all, this movie is a good proof that Jim Carrey can play drama, and not only “Ace Venture” and “The Mask”. I was suspecting this since “The Truman Show”. Secondly, it was good remind that Kate Winslet is alive and can act and that she shouldn’t be thrown out off the board of “Titanic“. And thirdly, it was good to show that Elijah Wood is not going to be Frodo all his life.

Overall, a perfect movie and a must see. It would be nice to have it in home collection also.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

I stayed up rather long today configuring the full screen mode for the Nvidia TV-OUT and building a user friendly interface for DVD playback for Olga to use. After everything was configured I decided to test it out with a movie session.

It was not the first time that I’ve seen “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest“, but I enjoyed every bit of it anyway. This is one of the best films made ever and I am so happy now that it is in my home collection. A must have. The movie itself is somewhat different from the book, but it is an excellent watch never-the-less.

There is another DVD with all the special features, interviews, and stuff which I will watch some other time… when I am not so sleepy. :)

50 First Dates

Olga and I went to see “50 First Dates” in the cinema today. I think it is one of the best Comedy/Romance movies that I have seen so far. The plot and actors were well known from the trailers. But it was much more fun than I expected.

There were only few characters, but each and every one of them was completed with all details and personal touch. There were quiet a few gigs spread more or less equally throughout the movie. There was a point in the film. All in all it played nicely alltogether.

Are still not convinced that you should see this movie? Two points more I’ll mention for you. First, there is no happy end. Some magic fairy doesn’t come from nowhere and save everyone. Second, this film was directed by Peter Segal, the same guy who did “Anger Managemen” and “Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult“.
