Dog Soldiers

Hazard, Olga, and I watched “Dog Soldiers” on DVD today. It is a nice British flick on werewolves. There are a couple of differencies that this movie has from a whole bunch of others. Firstly, it is not another Hollywood blockbuster with shiny details and special effects. This film simply doesn’t have the budget that most US studios have. Secondly, it has a different perspective. Instead of a mixture of werewolves and civil citizens this time you enjoy the point of professional British soldiers. They have organization and weapons. Organization is shown excellently, but the pity is that most of the weapons don’t work against the creatures.

The happy end is present though, which makes it look a bit like a wanna-be-american movie. Overall though I would give it a 6 out of 10 and recommend to watch it on TV when the time will come.

Les Douze travaux d’Astérix

We have seen an excellent French animation – “Les Douze travaux d’Astérix” (“The Twelve Tasks of Asterix”). It’s a geniously drawen action from as far back as 1976. But being old has nothing to do with it, since it covers a range of modern subjects like TV advertising and car parking problems.

Unfortunately for many of us, the only comprehensible way you can see this is in English or Russian translation. But even being translated cannot hide the fact that it is one of the greatest animations ever created.

Strongly recommended for watching with or without kids and having this DVD in the home collection.

Arlington Road

Arlington Road

As a premier of Hazard’s new TV-set (34″ Tompson or something) we’ve watched “Arlington Road” today on DVD.

There is not surprise this movie wasn’t broadly advertised. It presents a fresh (in American terms) look on terrorism and history of United States. It also doesn’t have a happy ending. But it has a bunch of stars in it, like Jeff Bridges (Dr. Mark Powell in “K-PAX“) and Tim Robbins (Nick Beam aka the white guy in “Nothing to Lose“).

The film is a bit slow and full of drama, but has an nice ending. I’ll recommend it to anyone who ever thought about the terrorism and USA together, but doesn’t have a Bush washed brain.

Gerry

I watched “Gerry” on DVD today. It has been a long time since I had to fastforward a movie while watching it for the first time. I don’t even remember that I ever did it. I had to do it with “Gerry”. After I finished watching it for the first time, I immidiately fastforwarded through it again just to make sure that I didn’t miss anything. I didn’t.

Two guys, both named Gerry, for some strange reason (like playing their RPG) get lost in the desert. It’s not excalty a desert. It’s something in the middle between desert, prairie, a hilly terrain. It might have been interesting. Very interesting. Especially considering the fact that don’t have any food or water with them. But it wasn’t. All of their talking was a once in a while asking each other which way to go. That’s it. One of them also got a bit more depressed then the other. The other got pissed off with it and killed the guy after several days when they were all out of strength. And then he found out that the highway was like five miles away. So he will feel a bit guilty for the rest of his life. Maybe.

See this film if you like watching a couple of silent dudes walking for several days without any talk in the places which are not exactly magnificant. I’ll meanwhile vote it as 2 out of 10.

Kill Bill: Vol. 2 – The second time

UmaUma learnsToday I went to see “Kill Bill: Vol. 2” for the second time. This time I went with Lev. Out of three people (Olga, Hazard, Lev) that I have seen this movie with, all three liked it, but didn’t love it. I guess, this makes me special. :)

Watching it for the second time brought in all the pleasures of the first time plus even more. I noticed a whole lot of more details, listened to the soundtrack and generally enjoyed myself a great deal.

Now, like a true fan, I had to do something additional to voting 10 out of 10 at IMDB. So I went to the official site and stolen a couple of pictures for my beloved blog.
