Mr. Nice Guy

I’ve just watched yet another Jackie Chan movie – “Mr. Nice Guy” (known also under a few other titles). It’s a bit old, but works nicely as many other Chan’s movies.

The dialogs are strange. The movie is American, but all the dialogs sound like they are from Chinese action. Most of the sentances are stating the obvious in unusual words. The characters also behave like they are from Chinese flicks – make funny faces, spread legs while running, and fight excellent kung-fu.

The story is a bit boring, undetailed and underdeveloped, but lots and lots of action compensate for that. Jackie is fighting his usual style while utilizing anything that comes handy. He also utilized a megahuge truck for the final fight. That rocked you know.

Overall, I’ll rate this as a solid 6 out of 10. Good entertainment if you like this kind of movies.

No Way Back

Having DVD club as neighboors proves to be worth a while. We’ve just watched “No Way Back“. It is a bit old to cause any major shivering in the crowds these days. And even if it wasn’t, it is a pretty average movie.

Russell Crowe playes main part there even before he became popular, so if you like movies with celebrities before they became celebrities, this is one to watch.

Overall, the film is slow and mostly boring. There are a few nice scenes and a couple of funny jokes, but it lacks color. I’d give it a 5 out of 10 which tries to go into 6 out of 10, but fails. Get something else if you have a choice.

Shaft

Olga and I just watched “Shaft” on DVD. This is a very classy action. The story is kind of predictable, but in the cop movies, I guess, it always is. Goes with the genre probably.

Anyway, this movie has everything a good crime movie must have – a bad ass cop (played by Samuel Jackson, and we all know who he is from his wallet in Pulp Fiction), nasty criminals, lots of car chases, gun fights and lots of cool talk. It’s all in there. And what I like most is that the makers of the film know that they’ve got everything right. They don’t hurry trying to finish up with the movie since they’ve got your money. Nope. No, sir. They take you through it slowly, so that you could appreciate all the details. Great work!

I’d say that this film is easily worth an 8 out of 10. And I was not in the mood for it! Get it and watch it – excellent entertainment for those who like good action and cop movies.

Blackball

Watched “Blackball” on DVD. This is one of those average movies where you know everything before you’ve even seen it, but you still watch it because you have nothing better to do.

The story is something I’ve seen many times in other movies. Nobody becomes famous and he is so overwhelmed with it that all his relationships with friends, relatives, and women go down the hill. He than is pushed to realize that he is nothing without them, so he understands it, changes his attitudes back and everything happy ends.

The familliarity of cast was very mixed. Some actors are very well known, like James Cromwell and Alice Evans, others were not.

I’ll give this film a 6 out of 10, which is leaping into 5.5 out of 10. Get something else if you have a choice.

A Time to Kill

I stood in the DVD club and looked at the cover of “A Time to Kill“. It sounded awfully familiar. It looked even more familiar with Matthew McConaughey, Samuel Jackson, and Sandra Bullock on the cover. It even had a description, but I couldn’t remember it. So I rented the film.

Within a few first shots I recognized it. It is one of my favourite films on two subjects: court and rasism. It is kind of linear and one-sided, but it does deliver the point in a thought provoking manner. It has one of the best casts ever too. Basically, just about every face on the foreground you see in the film is familiar.

This is a good choice of a family movie for educating kids and adults about how all people are born equal, but some are more equal than the others. 10 out of 10 goes to the rating tables from me for the outstanding job.
