Trainspotting

I’ve rewatched the all time classics “Trainspotting” on DVD. This is the best movie on the topic of drug abuse ever made. Highly recommended for educational purposes for all sorts of schools, colleges, and home teaching, despite all the profanity and sexual content.

Not only this film brilliantly covers the topic, but it is a pleasure to watch too. It’s got an excellent cast who outperform themselves. Setup decorations, costumes, and soundtrack are all ideal.

Actually, I cannot give this movie anything below a 10 out of 10 rating. Watch it. Rent it. Buy it. You are not going to regret the experience.

Underworld

Watched “Underworld” on DVD.

This film is based on a nice story and has some great decorations and special effects. It also feels a bit Matrixish with desaturated (and leaned to green) colors, leather clothes with high boots and coats on many characters. There was some really nice photography too. On the bad side though, it was very slow and very boring at times. Some meaningless scenes were attempted to be dramatical with long pauses and looks and stuff like that. Also, there wasn’t one good fight during the course of the film. All fights were very artistical, unnatural, and with no fight instructor behind the scenes. I would also wish for some more vampire and werwovle action, like blood drinking and flash ripping. Film is rated R anyway, so I don’t know what the makers had to lose.

As it is, this film gets 6 out of 10 from me. Watch it if you are in a mood for a slow film about vampires with not too much blood and fighting.

AVP: Alien Vs. Predator

Just came back from the cinema where we watched “AVP: Alien Vs. Predator“.

This is a very overhyped movie. Trailer was good, potential of putting both Aliens and Predators into a fight in a single film was good, niche for special effects was perfect. It is a pity that this film missed on all of these. Story and all characters were way underdeveloped. Computer graphics and special effects were minimum. Soundtrack sucked. Acting was missing. Basically there was nothing I liked about this movie. It was very very very average.

5 out of 10. Just because Olga liked it a bit.

Bend It Like Beckham

Watched “Bend It Like Beckham” on DVD. It was a surprisingly good movie. I mean there are many similar films, but this one does really stand out.

Character development and attention to details is what makes this movie so good. Everyone you see on the screen seems so real, with the history, likes and dislikes and so forth. There are few interesting subjects brought up in the film: parents-children relationships and family, questions of preserving the culture in multicultural environments, sports and women. All of these are looked at from a tough, but kind perspective, which is thought provoking but not abusive of the audience.

Anyway, I think 8 out of 10 is a fair grade. Better soundtrack and a bit more original story could have made it better.

Cellular

Olga and I went to see “Cellular” in the movies today.

The movie turned out to be a disappointment. I was waiting for it because it had a potential, I thought after viewing a trailer and reading some more about it. The disappointment came from the movie getting almost everything right. The only BIG thing which was messed up was casting. Both Kim Basinger and Chris Evans were demonstrating absolute lack of talant, will, and grasp with reality and common sense. They tried everything they could to make audience hate this film. And we (audience) almost did. If it wasn’t for the efforts of William Macy and Jason Statham. Especially Jason. He was playing a bad guy, a dirty cop. And he wasn’t a crook like he was in “Snatch.“. This time he was really bad. And he even got me scared a couple of times through the course of the movie.

In short: the story was good, soundtrack was appropriate but not outstanding, casting failed miserably with two main characters and that spoiled the movie beyond the unbelievable. You might be interested in getting it on DVD, but don’t spend your hard earned cash at the cinema.
5 out of 10.

P.S.: Oh, and the lawyer guy was outstanding! His face does not seem familiar, but he will probably be discovered big time via a couple of episodes from this film.
