I know it’s a bit of a short notice, but I’ve only just learned that myself. If you are in Limassol now and can’t think of anything better to do, drive to My Mall right now! They will have a fireworks show in about 30 minutes or so. Go!
Category: Cyprus
I live in Cyprus for many years now. It is a beautiful little island in Mediterranean Sea. It features warm weather for most of the year, sea, very kind and hospital people, plenty of jobs in IT industry, good food and plenty of alcohol, stable currency, and more. It’s really a nice place to live if you can handle small towns and villages. It’s also a great place to raise the kids.
Not much happens here. It is a quiet and simple place. Yet, when something happens or when I write about it, I post it to Cyprus category.
Brothers
Last Saturday I was up in the hills for a barbeque with a few of my friends. There were several groups of people at the picnic place, and all of them turned out to be Russian. More so, there were common friends between all of these groups. Eventually, people started moving from group to group and from table to table. That was a lot of fun.
As with any modern group of people, there were several digital cameras around. Slowly slowly, the pictures are making their way online. The image above was shot and post-processed by Olga Timofeeva. I think this is one of the best pictures ever taken of my brother and me together. There are more awesome pictures in her Facebook album, which is unfortunately not a public resource yet.
Other people shared pictures more publicly. Here is my brother’s album and here is an album by Dmitry Blokhin.
Earth photos from ISS
I think I’ve linked to some of these images before, but there is definitely more now and they are so beautiful that I’m sure nobody will mind looking at them again. These are some breathtaking photographs of our planet Earth from the International Space Station (ISS). The pictures are in three parts: part 1, part 2, part 3. Enjoy!
On Cyprus’ marriage laws
Being happily married now, civil marriages and other forms of living together aren’t high on my interest list, but I still found this Cyprus Mail article interesting.
Cyprus law does not provide for any other form of recognised cohabitation beyond marriage.
The matter came to the fore after authorities denied a 93-year-old woman a widow’s pension because she had never married her partner of 67 years who was also the father of her eight children. The woman had applied for a widow’s pension after her spouse – who had been making his social insurance contributions as long as he was alive – died in February last year.
The couple had been living together since 1943 and had eight children. They were not married because they were relatives by marriage – her brother married his sister – and were banned from doing so at the time.
This makes me think of the laws in historic perspective. Each and every law currently in existence has a history. Some time ago, someone somewhere had a need for a law being introduced or changed. There was a human being, a life, and likely more than one that would be affected by the law. How often do we really look back at and consider that?
TEDxNicosia : TEDx is coming to Cyprus!
No, it’s not a joke. And you are not dreaming. I couldn’t believe my eyes at first too. The famous TEDx conference will now be represented in Cyprus as well. Who could have imagined? The first TEDxNicosia will take place on November 30th, 2011 at University of Nicosia campus. The registration is already open and participation is only 25 Euro. Provided, of course, that you pass the selection and approval process, as with any other TED event. I have, of course, submitted my application and am waiting for the approval. This is so exciting!
