The young client

There weren’t any reasons to wait any longer, so I hurried back to the bank and opened an account for Maxim. The whole procedure took less than 15 minutes and the only document that I had to show was Maxim’s birth certificate.  That time was even enough for me to make the first deposit.

I was promised that a booklet will be mailed to our home address with detailed information regarding this type of account and all involved benefits.  Apparently, there are plenty of discounts in shops all over town (clothes, books, medicine, etc) that are linked to this account.

Let this bank account be my present to Maxim for his tomorrow’s 1 year 1 month birthday.

Everything worked out just fine

This is a quick update on my notebook post.

Everything works great and smooth. In fact, I am typing this post on the notebook, which runs a fresh install of the brand new Fedora Linux 5 (it was released just a couple of days ago).

As promised, most of the hardware worked out of the box. Video adapter, soundcard, USB mouse – it all worked.

I had to work a tiny bit for the WiFi card, but that was pretty easy too. All I had to do was download Intel firmware from this website, unpack it into /lib/firmware, and reboot the machine. Charm! The wireless interface came up by itself, found our office network, got all the settings, and started to work immediately.

I also had to spend a couple of minutes downloading and installing kdebluetooth RPM in order to have working Bluetooth.

Now everything is done and it all looks good.  It’s amazing to see the progress Linux has made during the last few years.  It is very user-friendly and easy to use now.  Way to go!

HP Compaq NX6110

HP Compaq NX6110Perhaps it all happenned somewhat fast, but I am still very very glad – I now have a brand new and shiny notebook – HP Compaq NX6110. Intel Pentium M 1.7 GHz, 1 GByte of RAM, 60 GBytes of hard disk space, 15″ monitor (not widescreen!), DVD-RW, and all the regular bits and pieces – USB, WiFi, soundcard with line-in, etc.

I’ve got all these for a special price of 600 CYP, thanks to my brother.

According to a couple of reviews from Linux on Laptops, most of the hardware should work out of the box, and the rest of it shouldn’t be a problem with a little push. We’ll see how it goes.

Flickr: discover YOUR fetish

Flickr is fantastic. Although I ran out of my bandwidth limits, I still visit it daily for a fresh portion of visual pleasure.

I am looking through a whole bunch of images daily. Sometimes though, I find something exceptionally perfect. Such images have to bookmarked (or “favourited” in Flickr tongue) immediately.

Every time I come back to my collection of favourites, I discover this or that common trend. It’s interesting to see how a bunch of images that I favourited over some time point me to things about myself that I’ve never noticed.

Today I discovered yet another fetish of mine. I doubt that there is even one word to describe it. Consider these two examples – one and two. (Women, dressed for chilly weather, drinking hot drinks from cups?) I favourited these two images days apart. On closer inspection of my favourites, I’ve also found this image, which is somewhat different in style and execution, but still features the same subjects (woman and cup).

I’ll be watching myself for more…
