New Jack City

Watched “New Jack City” on DVD. This is a really old movie (from 1991) and I think I’ve seen it before.

This film is a nobel attempt to show all the bad things about drugs and crimes using the methods of the recently (80-s) popular action movies. The drug scenes are pretty good, but the rest of the film is pretty worthless. The story around Chris Rock‘s character Pookie was done pretty good – criminal, drug addict falling down, than discovered by some good people, rehubed and cleaned up, and than falling back. The second fall is much faster than the first one. And is one-way ticket. Anyway, the scene where Pookie smokes crack after rehub, I believe, was inspirational to plenty of movies (Tarantino‘s work, “Trainspotting“, “Requiem for a dream“, etc). Great work here!

The problem with this film is actually the story that it is based on. There are too many things in it, but it is not complex by any means. Most of the stuff is meaningless anyway. And the drama needed more work. I mean we are talking about a whole bunch of victims of drug usage, but the only person crying in the whole movie is the drug lord himself, before shooting one of his comrades. Strange. Something is broken here.

This film played its role in the inspiration of drug fighting movies. It is too old to be watched this days, unless, of course, you are the fan of those. Take something else. 5 out of 10.

Bloglines “Related” Meme

Instructions from this entry in Joe Grossberg‘s blog:

Go to Bloglines. Find your own blog. (If it’s not there you can sign up and add it. If you don’t have a blog this one’s not for you.) Click related feeds. Post the top 5 (or more) on your blog.

For some strange reason, there are two identical feeds for my blog at BlogLines. They are unique except for the ID number. A bug? Anyway, I’ll use the first one that came out.

First few matches are other computer science in general and programming in particular blogs. Some of these are well-known, others are small and personal, like mine. After these technology blogs there were a couple of matches for general blogging (like Boing Boing). After that, a few general blogs in Russian language. And than a mix of developers, Russian, Linux, and blogging blogs.

I guess the “Related” thingy worked, although I didn’t rush into adding any of the matches to my reading list.

Time machine itinerary

Keeping a record of exact dates and places you want to be just in case you will ever get access to the Time machine seems like a really smart idea. (I’ve got it from here, by the way). I was stupid enough not to. Jez, I am so stupid! Imagine, if I get this one chance in a lifetime to do something really amazing and… I’ll be staying there unprepared with my eyes going from *blink* *blink* (like kids in the “South Park”) to tears the size of my fist. I will panic and come up with some really random date which will be so idiotic that I will blame myself for the rest of my life for choosing it.

The good thing is that I’ve been blogging daily for some time now and pretty often even before that. I have to go through all the posts now and try to find if any bells will ring. Damn! ;)

Oh, and I can only guess how many other people will be totally unprepared and will screw it up if offered this amazing opportunity…
