Photography tutorials by Norman Koren

Norman Koren has written a few interesting photography tutorials. His totorials differ from introductory articles that you get on most of the sites. They are much bigger, deeper, and are filled with links and pictures. For example, “Understanding image sharpness: Digital cameras vs. film” (part 1, part 2) or “The Canon EOS 10D Digital SLR:
Impressions and techniques” (part 1, part 2, part 3).

Shortest path to the terminator or MovieLinks

I came by an interesting site. These guys use information from IMDB to construct a shortest path from the actor or actress of your choice to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is also known as “The Terminator“. The big surprise here is how short are these pathes. I’ve tried a few names (big ones and small ones) and I didn’t manage to get more then 3 links. :)

If you get bored with this game, bookmark a general URL for MovieLinks, which can link anybody to anybody using the same database.

One Hour Photo

After fixing all the problems with the sound, I’ve decided to test the new TV and watch a movie. “One Hour Photo” was the next one on the list. It is a kind of movie I wanted to see, but after I’ve missed it in the cinema, I didn’t care too much to rent it. Accidentaly I’ve got my hands on the DVD a few days ago. ;)

It is a good film. It is different from a whole bunch of other in the way that it is about the maniac, but there are no dead bodies in the film. Not even blood. It kind of shows everything from the perspective of the poor guy with the wicked mind. Robin Williams is awfully like himself. I like the way he acts, but I guess I’ve seen too much of his movies. He is getting boring.

There were plenty of nice photographs in the film, which I especially appreciated, being an amateur photograph myself. Actually, all the camera work in the film was pretty good.

If you’d ask me to rate it, I would give it a 6 out of 10. Watch it if you want something slow, with no blood, few “F”-words in it, and few nice family pictures. Not particularly entertaining for my tastes.

What to do if your soundcard stopped working

Recently, I’ve got few electricity related things at my house go boom-boom, so I wasn’t very much surprised when the sound card stopped working in the machine I use to watch DVDs. With TV dying in the next few days I safely assumed that sucker burned my sound too. So, I’ve called up my brother who saved me with a spare card.

After I plugged thew new card in, I found out that it doesn’t work too. I’ve checked all the wires and stuff and was puzzled by the fact that software seemed to be playing sounds OK, it’s just I couldn’t hear them.

It turns out that that computer has another sound card built-in into the motherboard. And after a reboot that I didn’t noticed it suddenly started to use that card. Simply by sticking the wire into another soundcard all the movie gunshots came back.

Note to myself: don’t assume too much. :)

Dog Soldiers

Hazard, Olga, and I watched “Dog Soldiers” on DVD today. It is a nice British flick on werewolves. There are a couple of differencies that this movie has from a whole bunch of others. Firstly, it is not another Hollywood blockbuster with shiny details and special effects. This film simply doesn’t have the budget that most US studios have. Secondly, it has a different perspective. Instead of a mixture of werewolves and civil citizens this time you enjoy the point of professional British soldiers. They have organization and weapons. Organization is shown excellently, but the pity is that most of the weapons don’t work against the creatures.

The happy end is present though, which makes it look a bit like a wanna-be-american movie. Overall though I would give it a 6 out of 10 and recommend to watch it on TV when the time will come.
