Funny People

Funny People

Just got back from the cinema, where I watched “Funny People“.  When I saw the trailer, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see this film or not.  There were a funny scenes, but it looked like a cliché, more or less.   But then I saw a 7.3/10 rating at IMDB and decided that I want to see that.

The film turned out to be quite good.  It’s not really a comedy in the sense that you’d expect from the title, poster, and trailer.  It’s more of a drama with a few funny bits in it.   And while it does follow a sort of cliché story, it does it in an interesting way.  The best to describe it I guess, is with a bad racing car analogy – you can see the track and you sort of know where the car will go, but it still surprises you with its dynamics and by getting off the track at a few turns.  Except that the film is actually good.  You sort of know how it will end and how you’ll get there, but there are a few things which come slower or faster than you’d expect.

All in all, it was a kind, thought provoking, and at times quite funny movie.  Recommended, with 4 stars.  And if you want to see the trailer, here it is:

Punch-Drunk Love

I don’t know how I managed to miss “Punch-Drunk Love“, but I am sure glad that I watched it today. It has been a while since that both Olga and I are not feeling any excitement over “Comedy/Romance” genre. Neither of us is particularly crazy about Adam Sandler too. In fact, even the poster for this movie looks very boring.

Don’t believe any of these. “Punch-Drunk Love” is one of the best movies I have seen recently. Calling it a romantic comedy doesn’t do the film any good. In fact it is more of a suspensly tight drama. Everything about it is excellent. If I would have to say something bad about it maybe I would change the ending somehow. Maybe. Somehow. I am not sure.

It is an interesting wrap up story around “I am to shy to date girls” line. Brilliant sound. It’s not that much of a soundtrack, but a non-stop sound effect type of thing, that does audience mood control. Excellent acting. I am impressed by Adam Sandler. Philip Seymour Hoffman was great too. Emily Watson was not bad at all. Dialogs were great. Camera was great.

This film has “I know what I am doing” director’s stamp all over it. Something tells me that I should give it 9 out of 10, but I cannot hold myself by any argument. So 10 out of 10 that is!

Anger Management

Anger ManagementOff to cinema with Lev and Olga to see “Anger Management“. It is a good movie (actually almost excellent) with lots of good humor and good acting. Jack Nicholson is perfect. He just sprays energy around with every word and every movement. I felt the power. Actually, he is excellent in most of the movies I’ve seen with him – “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest“, “The Shining“, “The Witches of Eastwick“, “Batman“, “Wolf“, “As Good As It Gets“. He, for sure, knows how to Act, unlike the bunch of other “talented” pretty faces from Hollywood.

Adam Sandler (who can be remembered from “Big Daddy” and “The Waterboy“) was also quiet good and natural.

Two scenes which I could’ve watched another hundred times are: when they stop the car on the bridge and start thinging the “gay” song and when Adam Sandler was talking to the beautify red-dressed girl in the bar in Boston. These were excellent!
