System administrator vs. network administrator

AdminspottingI came up (I haven’t heard it before) with an easy way of destinguishing between a system administrator and a network administrator. All you have to do to find out if a person is a netadmin or a sysadmin is ask him/her to connect via secure shell to any host of his choice. If a hostname is used, then it is a sysadmin in front of you. If an IP address – it’s a netadmin.

# System administrator
ssh user@somehost.net
# Network administrator
ssh user@10.20.30.40

Mozilla stomps IE

I’ve just came across this story which dates back to 1997. Apparently, immidiately after a release of the new version of Internet Explorer few people got drunk and overproud. So they took the huge meta “e” (logo of MS Internet Explorer), drove it to the Netscape office and left it standing nearby in the middle of the night. Fortunately, Netscape people, who usually work in the middle of the night, noticed the thing. So, they dropped it on the side, painted “Netscape NOW” on top of it, and put their own Godzilla-like mascot over it.

There were a lot of publicity, but I haven’t heard this story before. Maybe you too.

In line with the recent posts about Vintage calculator museum and museum of Soviet calculators, here is a link to Obsolete Comptuer Museum. The older you are, the harder will be that nostalgy feeling in your heart.

Lots of pictures, information, links, etc. There are also forums to unleash your thoughts.

Update: There is also another one – Old-Computers.Com. Some entries here have much more information about the hardware, history, uses, and the like.
