The Sweet Hereafter

Just watched “The Sweet Hereafter” on DVD. IMDB calls it a drama. The cover of the DVD calls it a “social” movie. I would call it a really slow boring movie without any point what-so-ever. The story is very simple – there was an accident in of the small towns, where a school bus, full of children of course, went off the road and on to the lake, broke the ice, and drowned. Most of the children died, except for just the few, and a bus driver (woman). So, there comes this lawyer who tries to get this people together to sue someone for damages. That’s it. The cherry is in showing how this people are sufferring over the loss of their kids. The lawyer himself has a problem with his daughter who is a drug addict.

The best moral out of the movie that I can make is: Lawyers are bad, because there life sucks. But everyone else’s life sucks too. That’s it. If you knew that already, then you can pass this movie. This is one of those times when I am glad I didn’t make it into the movies when it was showing.

Ali

Just watched “Ali” on DVD. This is an excellent movie about boxing star Muhammad Ali (played by Will Smith). I’ve really enjoyed the film. It does show the difficult life of Muhammad Ali, his rise, fall, and another rise. Camera work is excellent as is the soundtrack. Boxing is shown from an exciting perspective. The movie is in the spirit of “Rocky” and sequels, but it also brings the motion picture progress of the last 20 years into it.

Those looking forward for a lot of action should probably skip this movie. It’s a drama and a story of the life of a famous man. Lots of fighting, not a lot of boxing..

Harte Jungs

Just watched “Harte Jungs” (also known as “Cool kids” and “Hard youngs”) on DivX at Hazard’s place. This is an excellent movie! This is a German, or you can say European, version of “American Pie” and sequels. It’s just that European kids grow up a bit earlier then their American peers. As usual, there is a lot of European humor and style in the movie which keeps one glued to the screen for the couple of hours.

This film, while being a nice comedy does rase few nice points about children’s sex education. Until recently there were not that many places that a kid could check for the questions that he has. Internet does save some time, but does one really want a child to learn by himself? Also, what is so uncomfortable in sex relationships that makes parents shy while talking about this particular subject. I don’t know. But I don’t have any kids yet either. :)

JFK

Just watched “JFK” on DVD. This might be an all time classic, but I’ve missed it somehow when it was in the movies.

The movie is about assassination of John F. Kennedy. Directed by Oliver Stone and featuring all familiar faces you could get into one movie (Kevin Costner, Kevin Bacon, Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Oldman, etc), this film is interesting. I am not very educated on the subject, so I cannot judge as to how real the story is, but it’s entertaining to say the least. People wearing tin foil hats should defenetely see this one. :)

Philadelphia

Watched a very good movie on TV – “Philadelphia“. Tom Hanks (“Forrest Gump“) and Antonio Banderas (“Desperado“) play a gay couple, where Hanks gets infected with AIDS, while being an excellent lawyer in a somewhat concervative but powerful law firm. They eventually find out that he is gay and that he didn’t tell that he has AIDS, so they sabotage and fire him. He is a bit shocked with the situation so he decides to take them to court (“How do you call 10,000 lawyers chained together on the bottom of the sea? A good start”). Most of the people are afraid of AIDS and are not comfortable at all while nearby an infected person, so there is noone to help Tom Hanks. Until, of course, a good man Denzel Washington (“John Q“) decides to step in. Together they proceed in building up a case, kicking everyone’s butt and the court of law and winning 5,000,000 dollars (evil laught.. muahaha)! Tom Hanks quickly dies of AIDS in the end but everyone looks happy with a lot of money and a proven point: don’t f*ck with gay lawyers. Joke. :)

There are some interesting points and good acting the film, so people trying to build there opinion on the subjects of AIDS and gay sex should probably watch it. Lawyers might find it to be a nice comedy however.
