I live in Cyprus for many years now. It is a beautiful little island in Mediterranean Sea. It features warm weather for most of the year, sea, very kind and hospital people, plenty of jobs in IT industry, good food and plenty of alcohol, stable currency, and more. It’s really a nice place to live if you can handle small towns and villages. It’s also a great place to raise the kids.

Not much happens here. It is a quiet and simple place. Yet, when something happens or when I write about it, I post it to Cyprus category.

Cyprus has lowest crime rate in EU

In Cyprus runs the story covering some criminal statistics of European Union in general, and Cyprus in particular.  There are some analysis to the numbers and some breakdown by type of crime and so on.

If you are visiting Cyprus on holiday, you can be reassured that Cyprus is the safest country in the EU – based on analysis of data from the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat.

From the site, you can find out that there were 2.3 million crimes recorded in Spain in 2012 (the latest data), 4.4 million in the UK and just 8,000 crimes recorded in Cyprus in the same year.

The bit that caught my eye was the term “recorded crimes”.  As if decreasing the number of recordings is one of the ways to minimize crime rate…

TePee no more …

This weekend I got my first bar ban.  I was asked to leave TePee Strictly Rock bar and to never ever come back.  Which I did and which I won’t.

(This post is here mostly for those people who were there on Saturday and who keep asking me what happened.)

What happened was an escalation of misunderstanding, mostly of what is rock music, what is a rock bar, what is a live gig, and what are the behavioral boundaries.  I don’t claim to be an expert on the subject, but I do have an opinion, with which a few people agree.  Too bad, the band on stage and the owner of the establishment didn’t.

It turns out I was too loud in the crowd.  It turns out I was making the band uncomfortable by screaming requests for something heavier (AC/DC, Rammstein, Metallica, etc) than Bon Jovi and Aerosmith.  Too bad I wasn’t familiar with the band’s repertoire – my bad.  And, it turns out that asking for a refund will get you kicked out.  No problem.  Maybe the band repertoire was a wrong reason to ask a refund for.  Maybe I should have mentioned the horrible sound engineering instead.  It’s too late now anyway.

On the other hand, it looks like some people enjoyed the gig (there are YouTube videos).  So maybe I was inappropriate.  To each his own I guess.  TePee is not a rock bar in my book anymore.  And I’m not a wanted customer in TePee.  Fair enough.

Paphos court orders Facebook to remove offensive comments

Cyprus News reports that :

The Paphos District Court has issued an injunction against social media giant Facebook, ordering the company to remove a number of offensive comments posted on a local business profile, aimed at a local man.

The comments, posted on February 4, accuse the man of criminal activities. The original post was still on Facebook on Wednesday morning.  It has over 1,000 shares.

Charalambos Savvides of the Ch. P. Savvides & Associates LLC law firm, which handled the case, told the Cyprus Mail that Facebook was not only required to remove the comments but also take steps to ensure that future related comments were taken down immediately.

In-Cyprus has a few more details:

The case concerns comments on Facebook made against a bar owner from Paphos who became the target of a hate campaign which attracted thousands of users who shared and liked the page. The man in question was, according to those who had got the ball rolling on popular social media site, committing various crimes around the town and especially against competing bars.

He was also accused of being a police informant that was getting special protection in the town despite his ‘known illegal activities’.

The man has denied all the allegations against him.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
