  1. I think that there are many people who believe that their web privacy can be safeguarded at least to some extent. Otherwise, why would closed-access posts be so popular in social networks? I don’t think it’s hypocrisy. I would think, it’s rather unsophistication, unless I had pretty geeky friends who write closed posts. They claim that they wanna have discussions with people they know well and are used to, without unexpected freaks. I have not seen much freaking in my open G+ posts, so I don’t see, on which experience this explanation is based. Maybe people are doing it “just in case,” or some other prejudices are in place, about which they don’t wanna tell me (I asked!).
So, I think that it’s not a hypocrisy, but rather unsophistication or prejudices.

    1. I think those people just don’t know any better. The rule of thumb is “If you want it to remain private, then don’t post it on the Internet”. It won’t guarantee privacy, but will definitely help to preserve it.

Closing posts to prevent access is very naive. Even if all intentional harm is factored out (and that’s a very big if), there is still possibility of software bugs and such. There are many examples of that around. Megafon SMS story from the last year comes to mind – http://www.unwiredview.com/201.....-open-web/

      1. It’s not like they expect absolute safety: they just want a low probability of unwanted people joining the discussion. My point is that such probability has been low anyway within our community: I saw such a person only once in my post, and my friend (the one, who is using Twitter in Moscow) saw it once in his post. I have reasons to believe that an additional goal of sharing to huge circles (often 100 to 200 people) in the case of this particular guy is an attempt to separate audiences by topics that interest them and not to spam a circle with posts, the topic of which is not among interests of this circle. It’s an understandable goal, but this is essentially the point that I am making: one should be able to manage topics, and not subscribers. This friends does not wanna discuss this point. I can’t figure out why. He is a good long-term friend, BTW, and an advanced web user.

          1. No objections against leaving social circles as they are :) People should have a choice. However, at this point it looks like Google is not concerned about giving people what they need, it’s rather dictating what it wants, and not in a winning way, I think.

  2. I am sure you will find common grounds with my husband – not only on the grounds of web freedom and anti-patent and anti-copyright, but also over Haagen-Dazs. Which flavor is your favorite? Alexei loves creme-brulee :)

      1. I bought myself the Nexus Galaxy. And the Motorola Defy got fixed and upgraded. Blog post on all that is still pending. Need a few more days of Nexus experience before I write about it.

        1. We’ll be waiting: we have been wondering whether it makes sense to pay a full Google-set price for the unlocked one, when we are used to getting locked Google-branded smart phones for $200 from T-mobile. The damned provider can’t get the Nexus for some unknown reason.
