Blues Brothers 2000

They were showing the “Blues Brothers 2000” on TV today. I’ve tuned in a bit late, but I’ve seen this movie before in the cinema.

It’s a really nice action comedy with a lot of music in. It has this ol’times rock-n-roll atmosphere to it, but I guess it’s the same thing with all good music – from jazz to punk rock. :)

One special thing which sets this movie from all the rest is the combination of hippy kind musicians doing lots of driving. There are plenty of cars, car crashes, car chases, and car tricks in this movie with the best one being car parking.

This is one good movie to watch once in a while and it is also surely worth having in the home DVD collection.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

For the fifth time or so we’ve watched “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” today on DVD at Hazard’s place. This is an absolute classic and a must see for everyone. I bet it will be funny watching it for the millionth time too. :)

My favourite places are the arguing with French soldiers in the castle (“…you English pig-dogs…”), giving instructions to the guards (“…do not let anyone leave this room…”), and the song about the brave Sir Robin (“…and he is not afraid to die in many naughty ways…”). These are thought just slightly ahead of many others. Great movie! :)

Is it beach time yet?

BeachToday Hazard, Olga, and I decided to find out if it is the beach time yet. First destination was Kurium beach. It was sunny, but very windy and noone was swimming suggesting the low temperatures of the water.

We then decided to regroup at some other beach within the city borders. There is a somewhat OK beach behind the Pizza Hut in tourist area. So we went there but results are the same – strong chilly wind, lots of sun, and not one soul in the water.

The result of the research – no, it’s not time for the beach parties just yet. We will repeat the survey in one or two weeks. :)

Fix for Fedora Linux Core 2 LDAP authentication problem

Just few minutes after posting to Fedora mailing, I’ve managed to find the solution to my problem with LDAP authentication in Fedora Linux Core 2. Murphy’s law in action. :)

First (brief) impressions of Fedora Linux Core 2

I’ve upgraded my office workstation from Fedora Linux Core 1 to Fedora Linux Core 2 today. I had only about an hour to play with it, so no super review here.

The upgrade process was very similar to most of the previous Red Hat Linux versions. No surprise. Fedora Linux Core 2 comes binary packages come on 4 CD-ROM disks, which means one extra swap operation. No worries. It will be unnoticable to anyone doing a network install or upgrade.

The first boot indicated that there might be some problems. My machine boots into runlevel 5 where kdm is supposed to meet incoming users. It didnt’ happen this time. X server was running and I saw an nice sandclock mouse cursor rotating above the black background. Consoles didn’t let me in neither as a regular user, nor as root. I’ve rebooted the machine just in case, but got to the same results. Booting it into single user mode revealed a problem with PAM. After playing around for some time and comparing new config files (the magic $ISA) with the old ones I managed to fix the /etc/passwd authentication as well as clear text LDAP. That was my biggest success. For some strange reason LDAP with TLS doesn’t work. I’ve searched through web and tried most of the suggested solutions, but none helped.
