PHP IN CONTRAST TO PERL

There are plenty of holy wars on the web that argue about superiority of PHP over Perl and vice versa. There are many people who prefer PHP, and there are many others who prefer Perl. I am, of course, in the Perl camp. I have programmed both Perl and PHP over some time, and there is no doubt in my head that Perl is way better than PHP as a language. The only point that I like about PHP is the how mod_php works. mod_php is a PHP module for Apache web server, for those who don’t know.

Anyway, back to the subject. I came across an excellent document titled “PHP IN CONTRAST TO PERL“. It summarizes the benefits of Perl compared to PHP nicely and clearly. It also links to a number of other resources on the subject, as well as provides the summary of those resources. Really neat paper and a must read for anyone who has or will have to deal with Perl and/or PHP.

Yet another trip to Akamas

Yet another trip to Akamas we had today with Olga, Hazard, Lev, my brother, and Olga’s two cousins. Traditional visit to Viklari tavern for some pork and red wine, and then some beaching nearby. Since we went a little bit later than usual, we didn’t go to Lara Bay. That saved us about 15 minutes of road trip each way, and added some experience with waves. We also scared away a couple of nudists.

I have made a few pictures. The album is here.

Experience with CID

PhotographerToday I have spent the first half of the day in Nicosia at Russian Council. My brother, my wife, and myself all had to do some paperwork. After I have finished with my part and was waiting for my brother, I walked around and made few pictures. Apparently, the guard at Egyptian Embassy was all alerted and reported me to CID (if anyone knows what this abbreviation means, let me know). Two officers came, checked all my papers and questioned me. They checked my story over the phone with another guy who confirmed my status, my visa, and stuff like that. They have asked me (although I was first to suggest) to delete the pictures of the Egyptian Embassy building and the guard at the gates. Of course, I did. This is one of the beauties of the digital photography – you can delete a couple of images without ruining the whole film.

The only few pictures I was allowed to keep from Nicosia were with the photographer you can see on the left. He looked really cool, and when noticed me taking pictures of him, he shot me in return. Later, when the CID officer saw the picture of this guy on the display of my camera, he told me that this is a very famous photographer in Cyprus and that everyone knows him. Heh, looks like not everyone. Again, if anyone can recognize the guy, let me know.

The moral of the story (confirmed by arrived immigration officer) is: do not photograph any government buildings, military setups, courts, embassies, police offices, and the like. It can easily get you into trouble.

P.S.: Both CID officers that questioned me were very calm, polite, and generally positive. I was really impressed on how delicate and politically correct they handled the situation.

Google AdSense progress

It’s been a while since I installed Google AdSense. Meanwhile I am getting closer to my first check. I have passed the $85 USD mark on the way to the $100 USD. I guess I should receive some money within the next couple of month.

Thanks to everyone who is clicking on the ads once in a while. I hope they are helpful. :)

What’s the worst movie you ever seen?

There is an interesting post at Slashdot asking what was the worst movie you ever seen. Some discussions are really hilarious. Star Wars I and II, Gigli, Highlender 2, and few others are popping up more often, although some people consider Shrek and Starship Troopers to be the worst ones ever… These guys are just lucky – I’ve seen far worse.

I, myself, cannot remember the worst movie ever. I didn’t like Star Wars I and II, but they were far away from the worst movies. Gigli was pretty much OK. Hihglender 2 I cannot remember seeing at all. Matrix sequels were bad. Really. But not the worst. Few Travolta films, like Battlefield Earth and Swordfish were ugly. Not the worst again.

I guess, it is just how my memory works – it throws out the worst experiences immediately after gaining them. I’ll think more about what was the worst film that I have ever seen, but I need some time…
