The winter is coming, the winter is coming!

I remember trying to pull the bed sheet from Olga all night today. When I woke up I felt chilly and wasn’t in the mood to get out of bed. When I stepped on the floor, I realized that it was than chilly – very refreshing. I was extra fast putting my clothes on too.

When I stepped outside, I immediately felt the urge to stick my hands into pockets of my jacket. Steam was coming out of my mouth. And I had no will to go to work.

While walking towards the car I was wondering if that’s really so cold or if that’s just me dramatizing on weather. As soon as that thought came to my mind, I heard a loud bang. It was a sparrow. He probably decided that life wasn’t worth living no more with temperatures that low and crashed into the office window at full speed. He dropped dead and made me feel sad.

Morning just wasn’t working out.

I started the car and checked the outside temperature. 9 degrees Celsius! (If you think that’s not cold, try boosting the relative humidity in your area to something above 60%.) No wonder I felt cold…

On the way to the bakery to get some breakfast I saw a couple of Philippino guys. They were even cold to look at. It was like they were wearing all clothes that they had, and then some more, borrowed from a friend. One of them had two hats. Poor guy was freezing his brains out I guess.

I came to the office about 20 minutes before the start of my morning shift (The start of the shift is at 7:00am), so I had enough time to enjoy the hot and sweet cup of coffee with still warm and fresh mushroom pie from the bakery.

Morning turned for the better…

  1. Hi Leonid,
I live in wet damp England so I do not find the Cyprus weather at all cold. But I do notice a big difference between when the sun is out or hidden behind clouds in the Cypriot winter months. A difference of almost 30F sometimes. Anyway the best way to keep warm is walking, which I do all the time, in Limassol, up in the mountains or on the coast. You seem a very intelligent and amusing person. My question for you is it my imagination but do a lot of Russians seem quite miserable in Cyprus. Are they unhappy or is it just their nature to look sad. Keep up the good work with the blog. By the way, I edit websites for a living, from an editorial perspective. Malcolm

  2. Hi Malcolm,

I have to disagree with you a bit – the best way to keep warm is to stay inside and to switch on the heating. :)

Russians… well, Russians have this terrible side of their character which prevents them from being happy. No matter where they are. Something will always annoy the hell out of them. Not me though. Few years ago I realized that I am a happy person, and that I will be happy no matter where I am. Probably I have some non-Russian genes in me. ;)

  3. Hi again Leonid,
It is as I suspected with Russians in Cyprus, some exterior sadness is inherited but nevertheless sunny Cyprus ought to cheer some of you up. Have to say the worst experience of rudeness I have met in Cyprus was in an English bookshop near the Holiday Inn. An arrogant old English lady who caused me to exit her shop very quickly. Worst than any Cypriot. Can you recommend a Russian bar or restaurant in Limassol or beyond where the Russians laugh a lot as I do like the occasional vodka drink when I am on holday in Cyprus. Cheers Malcolm

  4. Malcolm,

laughing Russian is a rather rare view. ;)

You can try to catch some though. Best places are:
    1. Chesters Pub, opposite Hawaii Grand Hotel.
    2. Molly Malones Pub, 300 meters towards Limassol center from Chesters Pub.

There are some in Malenkaya Rus’ restaurant, which is behind Chesters Pub, but they mostly eat and drink. Still the occasional laugh can be heard. :)
