I’ve got bored with fixing NVidia drivers after every kernel update on my home machine and bought a dedicated device for DVD playback – trevi DVX 3508. I wanted one of those excellent Yakumo devices, but they were out of stock, so I settled down with the first thing that they offered me.
DVD players are extremely cheap this days and there is no excuse no more for not having one. trevi DVX 3508 costed me about 45 CYP. And it can playback everything – DVDs from any region, DivX and VCD, mp3 disks, and even jpeg photo galleries.
I haven’t had the time to test it properly but from the first few looks it looks great. I tried the playback of several DVDs from different regions (1 and 2 mostly) and they all worked. I’ve also tried the jpeg photo gallery on DVD and it also worked nicely with the slide show and all the usual bells and whistles.
Congrats on the new device :) Fixing Nvidia drivers is really boring – I use them as well :(
I am glad to know about that.
Well, first of all you don’t reinstall your kernel every week or even month, do you ;) (otherwise I should feel sorry for you). Secondly – can that piece of equipment play Xvid (seems to be getting popular theese days)?
Otherwise it sounds like a good solution, especially cause watching moovies on big TV screen should be more exciting than on a pc monitor (i guess).
Sergey,
Kernel updates are coming out pretty often. Once in two month or so. That’s often enough for me to get bored with fixing it.
Secondly, I haven’t tried xvid compatibility, but I am not sure I need it. The absolute majority of movies that I watch come either on DVD or as DivX.
Thirdly, I was always watching movies on the big screen. That was the whole point of fixing Nvidia drivers – my video card is with TVOUT which is connected to the TV. :)
