Pope’s ‘doves of peace’ attacked by other birds at Vatican

Today, two white doves, a symbol of the hope for peace, were released from a window in the Lateran Palace by children standing next to the Pope… and immediately attacked by other birds. It happened, not just in front of the Pope, but before a large crowd that had gathered in St. Peter’s Square to hear him give the Angelus Prayer.

Beware of religious scammers

Cyprus Mail reports:

POLICE YESTERDAY warned members of the public to be wary of scam artists posing as religious or charitable groups.

According to police, a group of people are going around pretending to members of a church committee or charity selling pictures of negligible value for €50 or more.

Their target market is elderly people who often get duped into buying the pictures, said police.

The public is asked to be particularly careful and to report any suspicious incident to their nearest police station or the Citizen’s Hotline on 1460.

This assumes that religious and charitable groups aren’t scamming people out of money.  And I, personally, find that debatable.

Racist archbishop

Cyprus Mail covers interesting commentary from the archbishop Chrysostomos II:

Asked if he would consider backing left-wing AKEL’s candidate Stavros Malas – the Archbishop has openly spoken out against the government’s communist approach – Chrysostomos said, “They have plenty of supporters; they don’t need me; although they may have reduced in numbers now”.

Pressed further if he would ever back a left-wing president, provided they had the same views, the Archbishop replied: “I would even back a black man, if we had the same views.

I’d have to agree with AKEL here:

The statement was not well received by ruling party AKEL, which last night announced it was disappointed with the archbishop’s comments.

The party said it was of the impression that the head of the church should view all members of the flock equally, “whether they are right-wing, left-wing, black or white”.

That should be true for everyone, but especially so for the religious person, who’s lord created everyone equal.

Religious programming

Here is a snippet of discussion I had with a colleague today.  I thought it was funny:
