Yet more scanned pictures

Galina Ruban

I have added yet more scanned pictures to the site. Firstly, family tree was updated with many many pictures. Mostly, these are Olga’s relatives (father, mother, sisters, etc). More to come.

I have also dug up photographic documentation of one of the last times I was doing sports. That was back in 2001 when I went rolling with Svetka for a few days in a row. Some pictures of that are here. I have learnt an important lesson that time – if you are forced to do sports, surround yourself with beautiful ladies, because they will make your life easier. Even if they will be your future wive’s friends. :)

Temporary mail outages

I am experiencing temporary email problems due to major migrations back and forward. I have attempted to move all accounts on the home server from mbox to Maildir and still do have some troubles with Courier IMAP. So far all incoming emails should end up where they were supposed to. Reading them, though, is a totally another story.

Hopefully, I will sort everything out within running Saturday. Sorry for any inconvenience (who can spell it better at 5:30am?) caused.

Am I awake?

Since I am posting so much into this blog and doing it all around the clock, some people started to use my blog to help them determine if I am awake or not (in the sense of accepting phone calls or not). That was a rather logical step and I should have covered it earlier.

The trick is really simple. Nucleus CMS allows me to specify date and time when the article should be published. Sometimes I post articles immideately after writing it. Other times, I push them further into the future. To destinguish one from another, just check the time of posting. If the time of posting displayes nice minutes (00 or 30 sometimes), than most probably the article was written in different time from the one it was posted. Most common “pushed” articles appear at 14:00, 15:30, and 16:00.

On the other hand, if the minutes seem random (like 47 or 09), then the article was probably posted immidiately after it was written. You can use this time to estimate if I am awake or not.

Real life example: I am finishing this article at about 23:15 of September 20th. But it will appear on the web only at 01:00 of September 21st, since 20th is already pretty busy with other post and I need a better destribution of posts over days so that you guys will keep coming back regularly.

Thanks for reading.

P.S.: I have also set the time for the future because I will not wait until the new day will come and will go to sleep. :)

Home workstation upgraded to Fedore Linux Core 2

I have upgraded by home workstation from Fedora Linux Core 1 to Fedora Linux Core 2. Everything went nice and cool except for the X server. For some reason, X.org didn’t want to use my old XF86Config. After I played around with it trying to convince it, I gave up and regenerated a new config file with ‘X.org -configure’. I had to backport minor bits, like Russian language keyboard setting and mouse wheel configuration from the old file, but that was easy.

I have been running Core 2 on my office workstation and didn’t have any problems for some time now, so I decided to try it at home.

First impressions are rather good. Applications startup faster, especially native KDE stuff. I haven’t noticed it in the office since I have a very powerful machine over there and nothing makes a difference anymore. At home I am still runnnig on Pentium III 800 MHz with 256 megs of RAM, so any speedups are noticable. Another improvement is nicer fonts. Firefox shines. :)

I do recommend switching home machines to Fedora Linux Core 2, since Core 3 is coming out really soon (in a couple of month or so). It will be easier and safer to upgrade, I think.
