This website is very old. It’s been with me for many years. There are plenty of articles which are useful both for myself and the rest of the world. Bit by bit, word by word, link by link, image by image, this site was filled and filled over the years. Technologies changed. Some new techniques and concepts came up. Some old ones faded away. Spending as much time as I possible can (after everything else) on this site, sometimes I manage to introduce big changes – like a new bit of functionality or a totally different look. Not to confuse and scare everyone, I try to be open about the changes that were made. When something big is changed I post a description of what it was and why I felt the change was needed. These updates are published in this category.

Gucho upgraded to Fedora Linux Core 3 + updates

I have upgraded gucho.kirzis to Fedora Linux Core 3. All updates were also installed. There were no major problems as always. A couple of tiny bits I ancountered this time were:

  • I had to remove non-standard Exim before I could install a proper one from updates. All config files seem to work, so this is not a major one.
  • Bind has created a new configuration instead of the old one (which was of course saved as .rpmsave). It took me about 20 minutes to realize why my home network is behaving wierdly. Ethereal saved the day with a portion of truth.

I’ll be nailing minor issues for the next day or two. If you will notice anything, please let me know via comments or email.

Nucleus CMS upgraded

Originally I wanted to upgrade my mix of CMS setups to the newest version of BLOG:CMS. Unfortunately, after digging into it a bit, I realized that I don’t want to do that just yet. There is no good upgrade path, because I would have to make a new installation, reconfigure it, and than import and export everything from the existing one. That seems like a hell a lot of work without giving me a lot of benefits.

Instead, I have upgrade my installation to Nucleus CMS version 3.15. I have also freshened it up a bit with a few new plugins. Everything looks like working now, but I will be doing small changes here and there, so if something brakes, just let me know and I’ll fix it.

More upgrades are coming. Downtimes.

Ok everyone, it has been a while since the blog was down. I have to do something about it. There are 2 items on my TODO list:

Originally, I was thinking to do them in these order. But I after realizing that I don’t have the CDs with images of Fedora Core 3 handy and that I’ll have to download and burn them, I decided to switch the order. So, I will start slowly with the upgrade of blog software and when ISOs will arrive I will proceed with the operating system upgrade.

Both of these will cause downtimes. Hopefully, blog software upgrade will result in a couple of short downtimes and some minor look and feel fixing with all the new styles, skins and plugins that they have.

Operating system upgrade will result in at least one major downtime of an hour or two. From what I have seen so far, there shouldn’t be any problems with software and configuration, but noone knows for sure.

Wish me luck and don’t remove the site from your bookmarks just yet. There will plenty of goodies to come back to.

Unicode saves the day again

I have finally fixed a bug with encoding of the blog. The content was always served as UTF-8, but the encoding was set to iso-8859-1. Editing the file nucleus/language/english.php helped. Your browsers should not be confused any more and Russian characters should work fine in the BlogRoll. Yabadabadu!

New category: Syndication

I have created a new category – Syndication. It will host all posts about web syndication, RSS and Atom feeds, feed aggregation and things like that. Most of these appeared in Blogging category previously, but that is not right. I have also moved a bunch of posts in there, so that you don’t feel lonely if you decide to flip it through.
