You could have experienced a few minor downtimes today (couple of minutes each). By brother helped me to upgade my server a bit. Now it has 768 MBytes of RAM. Things should work better…
Category: Site News
This website is very old. It’s been with me for many years. There are plenty of articles which are useful both for myself and the rest of the world. Bit by bit, word by word, link by link, image by image, this site was filled and filled over the years. Technologies changed. Some new techniques and concepts came up. Some old ones faded away. Spending as much time as I possible can (after everything else) on this site, sometimes I manage to introduce big changes – like a new bit of functionality or a totally different look. Not to confuse and scare everyone, I try to be open about the changes that were made. When something big is changed I post a description of what it was and why I felt the change was needed. These updates are published in this category.
No more home network
Since we are down to one machine for all our home needs, I have reconfigured gucho.kiriz a lot now. There is no more need for the .kirzis domain, thus it will be known as gucho.mamchenkov.net from now on. A bunch of useless services like dhcpd, nfs, and pormap were stopped. Firewall, web server, proxy server and mail server were reconfigured to dispose of internal IP addresses and .kirzis domain.
I have also upgraded all the software on gucho and installed a whole bunch of new packages, so that it appears as a useful workstation. With all the software available these days for Linux, I found Synaptic to be very useful.
If you notice any misbehavior with the site or the server, please let me know.
Test post from the mobile
Opera runs nicely on Sony Ericsson P800. Nucleus CMS renders properly and is very usable. The only two weak points that I see cuurently are:
- WYSIWYG editor is not too functional.
- My front page is way too large for GPRS. I need to make a lighter version.
Catching up with backposting
You might have thought that I didn’t made any pictures in the last few days, but it is not so. It’s just that I have been busy with other things away from computer to do some postprocessing. I’ve finished with the pictures now and backposted them to appropriate days for the historical reasons. In case you want to check those posts out they are here, here and here.
Look and feel updated
I have done a bunch of updates and upgrades in the last few days. Most of these were internal and hidden from the eye though. So, in order to thank you for all that patience, I give you a slightly different view of this page.
As you can see, I have reoganized the long list of links that was on the right side of the page. It was split into two parts, each of which is much shorter. I have also improved a bit on the CSS, so now you can actually enjoy the site in browsers other than Firefox. There are still a few glitches here and there, but I am working on it.
Let me know what you think about this look via comments. Also, feel free to point out any problems (and solutions) that you have with this blog.
