The Hitcher

The Hitcher

Recently I watched “The Hitcher“.  This film had some potential, but it totally blew it.  It was interesting to see it now, because it reminded me so much of “Death Proof” which I saw just a few days ago, and which has a somewhat similar theme to it.

I think that Sean Bean did very well as a maniac.  He was exactly the type of the killer I like seeing in this type of films.  Sophia Bush provided quality female part.  And the rest of the guys weren’t all that bad.  However, the person who did blood control for this film was completely out of touch.  There was too much blood in a places where none was needed, and there wasn’t enough where it was needed the most.  A huge minus here, which sorts of ruins the movie, considering that it was mostly supposed to be about blood.  It was also supposed to be about roads, and it did have a few car chases and crashes.  Nothing special here though.

Overall, a 6 out of 10.  Watch it on a boring Saturday, if you have nothing else to do.

Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power

Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power

The other day I watched “Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power“. I was hoping it would be at least in some way comparable to the “Carlito’s Way“, but it was not. It is not a bad movie, but it ain’t a good one. It promotes some good values (friendship, loyalty) as well as some bad ones (crime, violence, drugs). It mixes things in such a way that made me wonder if the film makers have their priorities in order.

As to the technical part of the film, I haven’t seen any huge holes or mistakes, but I haven’t seen anything special either. A simple story, average acting, average soundtrack, average photography, although I have to say there were a few attempts of improving that last bit.

Overall, an average movie – 6 out of 10. Watch it only if you feel an uncontrollable urge to see every crime movie out there. Otherwise, you can easily avoid it and spend your time and money on something more worthy.

Used Cars

Used cars

There are a few sure receipts to make a nice movie.  One of them is mix lots of cars with some boobs and a cool guy.  Of course, there are some film makers who will still be able to screw it up, but Robert Zemeckis is definitely one of them.  I just watched “Used Cars“, the movie he directed back in 1980, with Kurt Russel playing the main role, and this movie is still as good as it was back then. That’s a sign of good entertainment!

6 out of 10.

I Think I Love My Wife

I Think I Love My Wife

I was in the mood for some comedy, so I rented “I Think I Love My Wife“.  I knew that with Chris Rock on the cover of the DVD, I had at least a few laughs guaranteed.  I wasn’t wrong.

The thing with Chris Rock is that he is a stand-up comedian.  He writes comedy and then he talks it back to the audience from the stage.  And he is good at that (check YouTube videos for some samples, there are quite a few).   His comedy is usually about much debated topics – politics, racism, gun control, parenting, and stuff like that.

He is a pretty smart guy.  But he is not an actor.  Neither he is a director.  Even though, the titles of this movie will tell otherwise.  Chris Rock is a comedian – that’s what he does.  So this film, like many others that he took part in, is like a continuation of the stage from which he reads his comedy.  Maybe it’s a little bit more visual, with some more people on it, but it’s still just a stage for Rock’s comedy.  Not that I find anything bad in it anyway.

I like his sense of humor.  I like his choice of subjects.  And I like the way he usually looks at things.  He is one of those people who can put complex issues into simple terms.  He often suggests solutions or, should I say, possible course of actions, for the problems that he talks about.

In “I Think I Love My Wife”, Chris Rock explores marriage, the way relationship between husband and wife changes from the wedding day, through years of living together, having kids, daily routines, and things like that.  I have to say that once again he manages to put rather complex issues into simple words and clear perspectives.  However, this time I wasn’t very satisfied with the way the story ended.  It was like an exploration, during which the explorer got scared and aborted the mission.  Maybe because he got scared.  Or maybe because he wasn’t as far there as he was trying to push the movie.  I don’t know.  What I know is that the film went like 80% of the way and then suddenly ended.  And that was a disappointment, since I really enjoyed the journey.

6 out of 10.  Recommended for married couples.

The Island

The Island” is one of those new movies that everyone has seen except for Olga and me. I rented and watched it, so Olga now is pretty much the only person in the world to miss it.

IMDB raintg: 6.8
My rating: 5.0

But she is not missing a lot. The film is surely overhyped.

This film is very shallow considering the topic it deals with – human cloning. I think that this topic is one of the most philosophical issues of the recent times. There is a lot to discuss. And there are a lot of viewpoints. Also, depending on the point of view, it can be very dramatic. And a very dramatic point of view was chosen for the film – cloning as seen by clones. Those who realise that they are clones that is. But there was no drama. What-so-ever. Ever.

Somehow, the movie managed to be a pure action. There was nothing else – no drama, no romance, no comedy. Nothing. Only action. And while there were some excellent action sequences and special effects in the second part of the film, the first hour or so sucked pretty bad. It was very slow and boring. And I almost fell asleep watching it. Twice.

What made it even worse were all the inconsitences in the film. It looked like those who made this film didn’t believe in what they were showing themselves. Skills and knowledge were appearing and disappearing from people’s and clone’s behaviors. They were swallowing new concepts like they were peanuts. “- You are not humans. You are clones. – Oh, Ok, then. Thanks for telling us.” And stuff like that.

Overall I think that this film is a waste of time and I am glad I didn’t spend my money in the cinema.
