Touchtyping analogy

Today I engaged in yet another discussion about the need of touchtyping for programmers with few of my collegues. My position on this issue is ver well known – I think that touchtyping is a requirement for a good programmer. I accept, of course, that there are few good programmers out there who can’t touchtype, but they are very few and they are only an exception that supports the rule.

Purchased a DVD player

I’ve got bored with fixing NVidia drivers after every kernel update on my home machine and bought a dedicated device for DVD playback – trevi DVX 3508. I wanted one of those excellent Yakumo devices, but they were out of stock, so I settled down with the first thing that they offered me.

DVD players are extremely cheap this days and there is no excuse no more for not having one. trevi DVX 3508 costed me about 45 CYP. And it can playback everything – DVDs from any region, DivX and VCD, mp3 disks, and even jpeg photo galleries.

I haven’t had the time to test it properly but from the first few looks it looks great. I tried the playback of several DVDs from different regions (1 and 2 mostly) and they all worked. I’ve also tried the jpeg photo gallery on DVD and it also worked nicely with the slide show and all the usual bells and whistles.
