On traditions

I was listening to the radio in the car today and there was this piece about China and its traditions and how people are afraid that traditions are being forgotten. On the average day I would just call it a bull and switched it off. But somehow they managed to catch my attention.

There were a few interviews with diffirent kinds of people about this issue. Old people were saying that they were worried that the younger generations don’t care anymore about the history and customs. Young people interviewed were saying that they indeed didn’t care much and that Western lifestyle and trends suit their interests better. And, of course, there were a few smart people who said that this all is a natural process and that, as always, the combination of old and new is waiting for us in the future. Like in all times.

These, lastly interviewed, people were saying something that is very close to watch I believe. I respect the traditions and the ways of the old. But I just hate it when people try to forcefully push the old ways into the future.

Mobile version is up and running

I came across a simply, but really useful plugin WP Mobile. It provides a much lighter version of WordPress blog for users of mobile devices such as cell phones and PDAs. Since I am a rather often guest of my own, and on many of this occasions I use my smartphone, I decided to install this plugin and link to the mobile version of the site from the navigation menu at the top. Feel free to bookmark it too.

Google Reader vs. Bloglines

As you might know, Google has offered a new service to the Internet community – an RSS/Atom aggregator called Google Reader. I’ve heard many people liked it. Being an active user of RSS/Atom aggregator Bloglines I thought I would check it out. There are a few things that I want that Bloglines hasn’t implemented yet, and there are a few things that could have been implemented better. So I was wondering if Google Reader had it right.

Long time no order

With me not buying anything off the web for a long time now and holiday season approaching, I decided to make myself a present. The top of my wishlist is occupied by photographic equipment – all sorts of expensive lenses and a flash unit. I reviewed my wants, needs, and the financial status and decided to readjust things a bit. It will be some time until I will be able to buy expensive Canon lenses, but I have gaps in the coverage of focal length spectrum, so I thought I should do something about it.

After some Googling, I made a choice to buy Tamron Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS (is it the longest lens name or what?). This lense has a good range of 27-75mm, which covers my needs pretty good. It is a rather fast one with f/2.8 aperture at all focal lengthes. The price of approximately $360 USD is affordable. And it has excellent reviews on the web. What else can I ask for? Well, I can ask for a lot of things actually, but that is irrelevant now.

And since I was already ordering something, it was a good thing to add a few smaller items, like a 128 MByte memory stick duo for my mobile (finally!) and few other small items.

I wonder if the package will make it here before Christmas.

That’s what I call raining

We are experiencing some of the heaviest rains today. One of them caught me on the road from the office to home. I was driving 20 km/h and couldn’t see nothing. The best I could do was to see the lights of another car about ten meters in front of me. It got a little bit easier towards the second half of my journey, but I faced another problem – loads of water on the road. At one time I stopped at the traffic light and saw this small van FLOATING from the street across mine. The guy was trying to steer, but there was no chance. He was lucky that he was floating on the green light.

With all the danger and confusion of this weather, I still like it so much that I wouldn’t change it for hot summer days. Thunders and lighnings are the greatest bonus ever.
