Irina birthday

First flowers

Most of the day Olga and I spent in the mountains on a picnic dedicated to Irina Georgiades first birthday. There were plenty of kids (about the same age), many adults, lots of food, drinks and other fun.

I have made a few pictures, of course. This time I tried to stay out of talbe overview type photos, which are so usual and boring. Instead, I focused on portraits. Light was pretty good – sunny day with few clouds and we were under the shadows of trees. Some pictures came out with screwed up exposure, but most of them were OK.

User Interface Design For Programmers

Joel Spolsky of Joel on Software fame once wrote a book on User Interface design. Target audience: programmers. People with analytical mind, rather than “all-dressed-in-black people with interesting piercings”. The book is short, up to the point, with lots of good examples. You can read it online here.

Temporary mail outages

I am experiencing temporary email problems due to major migrations back and forward. I have attempted to move all accounts on the home server from mbox to Maildir and still do have some troubles with Courier IMAP. So far all incoming emails should end up where they were supposed to. Reading them, though, is a totally another story.

Hopefully, I will sort everything out within running Saturday. Sorry for any inconvenience (who can spell it better at 5:30am?) caused.

It is one of those priceless pieces of information that you are looking for when starting in the college, which is, in fact, very simple, but is very hard to get.

The article though makes it look like it is relevant only for Freshmen, when it can help even few Graduates. I mean there are plenty of people coming out of the college who look nothing like students. Shame! Go read the article now.

relay_from_hosts in exim-4.40

Just in case you will bump into the same problem or if I will forget how to solve it…

If you want to use a file with a list of IP addresses that are allowed to relay mail through your server, you need to use net-iplsearch instead of plain lsearch. Plain lsearch will not work and you’ll get all those ‘relay denied’ errors.

hostlist relay_from_hosts = net-iplsearch;/etc/exim/relay_from_hosts

Specify IP addresses (and network masks if you wish) one per line (or with other separators that Exim understands).
