But that&#8217;s all usually from the perspective of the software security and end-user privacy.   Here&#8217;s a different perspective on the subject &#8211; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/millions-silicon-valley-spends-security-execs\/\">The Millions Silicon Valley Spends on Security for Execs<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Apple\u2019s most recent proxy statement, filed earlier this month, shows the company spent $310,000 on personal security for CEO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/tim-cook\/\">Tim Cook<\/a>. But that\u2019s a fraction of other tech giants\u2019 expenditures.<br>Amazon and Oracle spent about $1.6 million each in their most recent fiscal years to protect\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/jeff-bezos\/\">Jeff Bezos<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/larry-ellison\/\">Larry Ellison<\/a>, respectively, according to documents filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. And Google&#8217;s parent company, Alphabet, laid out more than $600,000 protecting CEO Sundar Pichai and almost $300,000 on security for former executive chair Eric Schmidt. In 2017, Intel spent $1.2 million to protect former CEO Brian Krzanich. Apple, Google, Intel, and Oracle declined to comment; Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.<br>Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was the costliest executive to protect; Facebook spent $7.3 million on his security in 2017, and last summer the company\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1326801\/000132680118000057\/fb-06302018x10q.htm\" target=\"_blank\">told investors<\/a>\u00a0that it anticipated spending $10 million annually.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, that&#8217;s pretty impressive in terms of money!  But do they need it really?  They do, at least, to some degree:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>While Silicon Valley firms haven\u2019t disclosed many threats to the safety of their executives or offices, they have good reason to take precautions. In December, Facebook\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2018\/12\/11\/police-investigating-bomb-threat-at-facebook-campus\/\" target=\"_blank\">evacuated its headquarters<\/a>\u00a0after the company received a bomb threat. Last year an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/police-say-youtube-policies-motivated-shooter\/\">unhappy YouTube user<\/a>\u00a0entered the company\u2019s San Bruno, California, headquarters and shot three employees before killing herself. And in 1992 the president of Adobe, Charles Geschke,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/06\/01\/us\/fbi-rescues-a-kidnapped-businessman.html\" target=\"_blank\">was kidnapped at gunpoint<\/a>\u00a0and rescued by the FBI.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you still dream of being an executive in a large company?<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>There&#8217;s plenty of talk about security when it comes to giant technical companies, like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple.
