{"id":28389,"date":"2018-02-15T13:09:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-15T11:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=28389"},"modified":"2018-02-15T13:09:00","modified_gmt":"2018-02-15T11:09:00","slug":"goodbye-foursquare-and-swarm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2018\/02\/15\/goodbye-foursquare-and-swarm\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodbye Foursquare and Swarm"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>It is the end of an era for me, and for once it&#8217;s me ending it and not yet another web service or social network disappearing.\u00a0 Today I&#8217;m saying goodbye to <a href=\"https:\/\/foursquare.com\/\">Foursquare<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swarmapp.com\/\">Swarm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I have been one of the early adopters of Foursquare and an active user for a few long years.\u00a0 I loved it from the moment I heard about it.\u00a0 The idea was brilliant and the implementation was good too.<\/p>\n<p>For me, Foursquare was a very elegant idea of a social network.\u00a0 The combination of the city guide with crowd sourcing and a gaming component was cool.\u00a0 \u00a0It provided an easy way to find new places, get recommendations, reviews, and tips, and wrapped it all in a points system that made sense.<\/p>\n<p>I thought that it was also useful for the business owners &#8211; knowing who checks in at your bar or restaurant, where else they go, how often they come, and what they think is great.\u00a0 Being able to offer promotions and special offers based on the check-in history of a user, I thought, was genius as well.<\/p>\n<p>But for some reason, Foursquare never really took off.\u00a0 Sure, I loved it and recommended it to every person with the mobile phone.\u00a0 But it never quite got as mainstream as, say, Facebook.\u00a0 Pity.<\/p>\n<p>But then things got worse.\u00a0 Foursquare has split the mobile app into two &#8211; Foursquare as a city guide, and Swarm as a game.\u00a0 \u00a0Swarm is still feeding Foursquare with content, but now there is no particular reason to install Swarm and use it.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think there was a single new user or anyone who just uses Swarm, without Foursquare.\u00a0 I might be wrong, of course.\u00a0 But from what I&#8217;ve seen, even fewer people were now checking in and contributing.\u00a0 Those who did were mostly doing so out of habit from the good old days.\u00a0 As did I.<\/p>\n<p>A few days ago, something else happened, which, for me, was the last drop.\u00a0 My Swarm app kicked me out and asked to re-authenticate.\u00a0 This was weird.\u00a0 But I did it anyway.\u00a0 And then, for some reason, all my history was gone.\u00a0 I still had those few friends in, and my settings were all good.\u00a0 But the history began anew.\u00a0 What?\u00a0 No!\u00a0 Sure, I can dig into it and figure out if I did something wrong.\u00a0 Or I can contact support and let them fix it.\u00a0 But what&#8217;s the point anyway?<\/p>\n<p>There is no benefit to using Swarm anymore.\u00a0 It&#8217;s points for the sake of points.\u00a0 So I&#8217;m over and out.<\/p>\n<p>Goodbye Foursquare and Swarm.\u00a0 It was fun while it lasted.<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>It is the end of an era for me, and for once it&#8217;s me ending it and not yet another web service or social network disappearing.\u00a0 Today I&#8217;m saying goodbye to Foursquare and Swarm.
