{"id":27820,"date":"2017-07-31T21:59:31","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T19:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=27820"},"modified":"2017-07-31T21:59:31","modified_gmt":"2017-07-31T19:59:31","slug":"replacing-default-mate-window-manager-with-i3wm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2017\/07\/31\/replacing-default-mate-window-manager-with-i3wm\/","title":{"rendered":"Replacing default MATE window manager with i3wm"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>For the last few month I&#8217;ve been torn between <a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2017\/02\/12\/i3-tiling-window-manager\/\">i3 tiling window manager<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2013\/05\/26\/i-love-you-mate\/\">MATE desktop environment<\/a>. \u00a0I love them both, even though they are very different from each other.<\/p>\n<p>When I&#8217;m alone, and have all the time in the world to write code, <a href=\"https:\/\/i3wm.org\/\">i3wm<\/a> is my best friend. \u00a0When I&#8217;m in the office, or need to move between tasks, monitors, and locations, <a href=\"https:\/\/mate-desktop.org\/\">MATE<\/a> is the best. \u00a0But I want both. \u00a0I don&#8217;t want to choose.<\/p>\n<p>Today I came across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mt2nxyEIf74\">this YouTube video<\/a> with a screencast of how to setup i3 window manager instead of the default MATE&#8217;s one. \u00a0Yes, i3 running inside MATE! \u00a0This sounds like magic!<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"660\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mt2nxyEIf74?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Things I have to do this week make tweaking a working desktop a really bad idea, so I probably won&#8217;t try this until the weekend, but it does look exciting!<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>For the last few month I&#8217;ve been torn between i3 tiling window manager and MATE desktop environment. \u00a0I love them both, even though they are very different from each other.
