{"id":26778,"date":"2016-10-23T10:52:06","date_gmt":"2016-10-23T08:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=26778"},"modified":"2016-10-23T10:52:06","modified_gmt":"2016-10-23T08:52:06","slug":"using-tables-with-markdown-in-redmine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2016\/10\/23\/using-tables-with-markdown-in-redmine\/","title":{"rendered":"Using tables with Markdown in Redmine"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>We use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmine.org\/\">Redmine<\/a> for our project management needs in the office. \u00a0It works pretty well, but there are, as with anything, a few rough corners. \u00a0One thing in particular that I was trying to figure out is how to use tables in Wiki pages, issues, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The official documentation says that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmine.org\/projects\/redmine\/wiki\/RedmineTextFormattingMarkdown#Tables\">tables are not supported<\/a> and you need to use HTML. \u00a0Yuck. \u00a0I do, of course, know how to mark up tables in HTML, but that&#8217;s definitely not the most pleasant of experiences. \u00a0Especially if you need to modify them later. \u00a0So I dug deeper.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that the documentation is outdated. \u00a0Modern Redmine versions (we are on 3.3.0) use the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/vmg\/redcarpet\">redcarpet<\/a> library for parsing Markdown, which supports tables just fine. \u00a0Here is an example of the Markdown that you can use in pretty much any textarea field:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: plain; light: true; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\r\n| Header 1     | Header 2     |\r\n| ---          | ---          |\r\n| Row 1 Cell 1 | Row 1 Cell 2 |\r\n| Row 2 Cell 1 | Row 2 Cell 2 |\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>And it&#8217;ll render as a table just fine. The dashed line separating headers should have at least 3 dashes for the parser to understand it correctly.
