{"id":22114,"date":"2014-07-03T00:55:13","date_gmt":"2014-07-02T22:55:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=22114"},"modified":"2014-07-03T00:55:13","modified_gmt":"2014-07-02T22:55:13","slug":"a-year-without-google-reader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2014\/07\/03\/a-year-without-google-reader\/","title":{"rendered":"A year without Google Reader"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2014\/07\/01\/google-reader-rss-survey\/\">Mashable<\/a> reminds us that it&#8217;s been a year since <a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2013\/06\/30\/goodbye-google-reader\/\">Google Reader has been decommissioned<\/a>. \u00a0They are also doing a survey to find out if people use more of RSS feeds now or less, what they&#8217;ve substituted it with and which tools people are using now to follow their favorite feeds.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve completed the survey, but without any visible results just yet, I thought I&#8217;d talk about my situation here. \u00a0In the last year my use of RSS has decreased significantly. \u00a0 Even though the actual number of the feeds I am subscribed to has increased, I read them less. \u00a0I share less. \u00a0I bookmark and blog about less. \u00a0And it&#8217; nothing but the tool&#8217;s fault. \u00a0Even though <a href=\"http:\/\/feedly.com\/\">Feedly<\/a> is an excellent tool &#8211; fast, flexible, with mobile support, and aesthetically pleasing, it simply is not Google Reader, which I was practically embed into. \u00a0I&#8217;ve looked around for <a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2013\/03\/17\/google-reader-alternative-quest\/\">Google Reader alternatives<\/a>, I tried a few. \u00a0Feedly is <a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2014\/03\/17\/moving-the-rss-to-feedly\/\">the best of the bunch<\/a> for my taste, but it&#8217;s different.<\/p>\n<p>So, with that in mind, what happened to all that free time that I used to spend in Google Reader? \u00a0Sadly, I have to admit that I&#8217;m much more on Facebook now. \u00a0Quality-wise, that&#8217;s a huge drop. \u00a0Instead of following my favorite writers, keeping in touch with all kinds of technology advances, and learning new things, I am now participating in flaming comment wars about nothing, and watching videos of cute kittens and bouncing boobs. \u00a0Cheap entertainment swallowed me and spat me out. \u00a0It&#8217;s exactly like never switching a television set was in the last century. \u00a0And it&#8217;s a pity.<\/p>\n<p>And the saddest part is that I knew it would happen. \u00a0And if I knew, Google definitely knew that too. \u00a0And they killed Google Reader anyway. \u00a0And it&#8217;ll be a long time until I let it go&#8230;<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>Mashable reminds us that it&#8217;s been a year since Google Reader has been decommissioned. \u00a0They are also doing a survey to find out if people use more of RSS feeds now or less, what they&#8217;ve substituted it with and which tools people are using now to follow their favorite feeds.
