gitignore<\/a> is a very handy tool for ignoring unnecessary files in the project. \u00a0 Most large projects have .gitignore<\/em> file included. \u00a0Most small projects would benefit from one too. \u00a0However, working as a developer on a variety of projects, it’s often difficult to add your own rules to all .gitignore<\/em> files around. \u00a0And that’s exactly what I wanted.<\/p>\n

I’m using Vim editor for all my coding needs, and I wanted to add Vim swap file and backup file to all .gitignore<\/em> files. \u00a0That sounded like annoying, so instead I looked around for a global gitignore solution. \u00a0As always, StackOverflow<\/a> has an answer for everything. \u00a0There is a way to disable extra files in Vim, but there is an even better way to have your own global .gitignore<\/em>. \u00a0Here is how to do it:<\/p>\n

  1. Edit .gitconfig<\/em> file in your home folder, and add excludesfile=~\/.gitignore<\/strong> line to the core section.<\/li>\n
  2. Create .gitignore<\/em> file in your home folder with whatever rules you desire.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
