{"id":17891,"date":"2013-03-17T11:25:36","date_gmt":"2013-03-17T09:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=17891"},"modified":"2013-03-17T11:27:30","modified_gmt":"2013-03-17T09:27:30","slug":"google-reader-alternative-quest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2013\/03\/17\/google-reader-alternative-quest\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Reader alternative quest"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2013\/03\/14\/google-reader-is-retiring\/\">the news of Google Reader demise<\/a> broke out, I, like many others, started looking for an alternative. \u00a0There are many RSS readers out there, both free and commercial, but none of them is quite like Google Reader. \u00a0 So, I thought, I&#8217;d share my adventures in hopes of more suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, here are the things that I am looking for in an RSS reader:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\"><strong>Web based<\/strong>. \u00a0This is a requirement for me. \u00a0I want to be able to access my subscriptions from any computer connected to the World Wide Web.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>OPML import and\/or Google Reader synchronization<\/strong>. \u00a0I have around 300 feeds in the Google Reader currently. \u00a0I am not going to resubscribe to each one by one and reorganized them again. \u00a0Ideally, I want to have a Google Reader sync, which will mark the read items, etc. \u00a0In the worst case scenario, at least the OMPL import, so I can batch add all the feeds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rich content support<\/strong>. \u00a0I want to see embed images and videos in the feed items. \u00a0I want the text to have style.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mobile app<\/strong>. \u00a0This is not a requirement per se, but a much wanted option. \u00a0I read a lot of RSS on the go.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Free<\/strong>. \u00a0Again, not a requirement, but a much wanted option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here is a list of the ones I tried:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theoldreader.com\/\">The Old Reader<\/a>. It looks like the old Google Reader, but it suffers now from all the spike of new accounts. \u00a0I&#8217;m trying to import my OPML, but I&#8217;m 30,000+ down in the queue. \u00a0The number keeps going up and down for the last two days, so I&#8217;m not sure when I&#8217;ll be able to actually use the service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tt-rss.org\/\">Tiny Tiny RSS<\/a>. I&#8217;ve installed it on my server and it does work somewhat well. \u00a0But the styling is very weak, and the experience is quite different from the Google Reader. \u00a0It will take me forever to get used to it, and while doing so, I&#8217;ll be constantly thinking of patching it up. \u00a0Removed, for now.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bazqux.com\/\">BazQux Reader<\/a>. \u00a0I have <a href=\"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2012\/08\/03\/bazqux-reader-rss-reader-that-supports-comments\/\">reviewed this service<\/a> a while ago. \u00a0It only got better with time. \u00a0In fact, this is the closest experience to Google Reader with a few extra bonuses, like item comments. \u00a0The service is not free, but not too pricey &#8211; choose between $9, $19, and $29 per year. \u00a0As far as the migration from Google Reader goes, this is the fastest service &#8211; two clicks, and you are already reading your feeds. \u00a0The only downside I see is mobile experience. \u00a0I couldn&#8217;t find the app for Android, and the website is not suited for smaller screens.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.feedly.com\/\">Feedly<\/a>. \u00a0The best styling of all I&#8217;ve tried. \u00a0Nice mobile app. \u00a0But requires a browser extension on the desktop. \u00a0Also, the experience is a bit different from the Google Reader, so needs some getting used to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, as you can see, I am yet to decide. \u00a0There are also quite a few alternatives that I haven&#8217;t tried yet. \u00a0From the ones I&#8217;ve tried though, the two most likely candidates are Feedly and BazQux Reader. \u00a0Feedly looks beautiful and works well on the mobile. \u00a0BazQux Reader provides the best experience on the desktop.<\/p>\n<p>Which ones have you tried and what&#8217;s your most likely alternative? \u00a0Have you made up your mind yet?<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>After the news of Google Reader demise broke out, I, like many others, started looking for an alternative. \u00a0There are many RSS readers out there, both free and commercial, but none of them is quite like Google Reader. \u00a0 So, I thought, I&#8217;d share my adventures in hopes of more suggestions.
