{"id":16878,"date":"2012-10-29T12:23:29","date_gmt":"2012-10-29T10:23:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/?p=16878"},"modified":"2012-10-29T12:23:29","modified_gmt":"2012-10-29T10:23:29","slug":"fixing-screen-resolution-on-linux-with-xrandr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mamchenkov.net\/wordpress\/2012\/10\/29\/fixing-screen-resolution-on-linux-with-xrandr\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing screen resolution on Linux with xrandr"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>Not the best start of the week today.\u00a0 For some weird reason my desktop&#8217;s screen resolution crashed into a safe 1024&#215;768 mode today.\u00a0 No updates, no changes in configuration, not even a reboot &#8211; just in the middle of the working morning.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve tried to fix it to no avail, installed updates, and even rebooted.\u00a0 Nothing seemed to help.\u00a0 Google to the rescue, and I find <a href=\"http:\/\/ask.fedoraproject.org\/question\/1717\/limited-monitor-resolution-in-fedora-16\">this handy page<\/a> that shows step by step how to use xrandr to fix things.\u00a0 I knew about xrandr for a few years now, but it&#8217;sbeen decades since I had to use it, so I&#8217;m rusty.\u00a0 15 seconds later I have the following script ready:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"brush: bash; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\r\n#!\/bin\/bash\r\n\r\n#gtf 1280 1024 60\r\nxrandr --newmode &quot;1280x1024_60.00&quot;\u00a0 108.88\u00a0 1280 1360 1496 1712\u00a0 1024 1025 1028 1060\u00a0 -HSync +Vsync\r\nxrandr --addmode VGA1 1280x1024_60.00\r\nxrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024_60.00\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Run it once and all is back to normal. In fact, after a few minutes in 1024&#215;768 mode, it feels like I have a better monitor now than I used to. They say, you need to lose something to really appreciate what you have. Until today I thought I had a crappy old monitor.
