From the article: &#8216;Betaworks is acquiring the Digg brand, website, and technology, but not its employees. Digg will be folded into News.me, Betaworks&#8217; social news aggregator. This is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052702304373804577523181002565776.html?mod=wsj_share_tweet\">not the outcome people expected for Digg<\/a>. In 2008, Google was reportedly set to buy it for $200 million.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This brings back a lot of memories. \u00a0Back when <a href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\">Digg.com<\/a> started, it became a &#8220;big thing&#8221; almost instantly. \u00a0There was plenty of hype around it, and many people went as far as predicting the death of <a href=\"http:\/\/slashdot.org\">Slashdot<\/a>. \u00a0Digg was supposed to be some sort of new and better Slashdot. \u00a0But when I tried using Digg.com, I immediately thought that that was not the case.<\/p>\n<p>The two sites are very different. \u00a0 One of the most obvious difference is that Slashdot is more focused on the technology, and Digg covers pretty much everything and anything. \u00a0 But that wasn&#8217;t the most important difference for me. \u00a0The most important for me was that Slashdot seems to be focused around discussions and commentary, while Digg.com was just a delivery system for the news articles. \u00a0And even back then there were numerous resources where you could find news. \u00a0Finding the news hasn&#8217;t been the problem for years. \u00a0But finding good commentary and discussions has always been. \u00a0And still is.<\/p>\n<p>Slashdot comments were and still are its greatest value. \u00a0Digg had discussions as well, but somehow they weren&#8217;t as valuable. \u00a0And if I think about it for a second, for me personally, the greatest value of Digg was not the actual site Digg.com, but the <a href=\"http:\/\/revision3.com\/diggnation\">Diggnation<\/a> show. \u00a0Which, once again, provided commentary and discussions of the top stories from Digg.com. \u00a0Too bad that is discontinued now as well.<\/p>\n<!-- google_ad_section_end -->\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start -->\n<p>Catching up with Slashdot today, I read about Digg.com being sold to Betaworks: The once popular social news website Digg.com, which\u00a0received $45 million in funding, is being\u00a0sold to to Betaworks for $500,000.
